Chargers can't put ball in goal

The regret lies in not pulling the trigger.

Wayne Country Day couldn't find the right offensive combination and endured a 1-0, overtime loss to Faith Christian-Rocky Mount in Class 1-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference game Tuesday afternoon.

"This was a true heartbreaker for the girls," said WCDS head coach Baron Heinemann. "In my opinion, they outplayed their opponents. But, as is sometimes painfully true about this game, it's the goals that count."

It was a matchup of the league's top two defenses.

The No. 3-ranked Chargers entered with a 1.14 goals-against-average and six shutouts. The No. 2-ranked Patriots possessed a 0.88 GAA to go along with eight shutouts.

The teams battled through two scoreless halves and one overtime until the Patriots (13-3-1, 6-1-1 CPIC) answered in the 95th minute. Mary Kate Watson timed her run perfectly, got behind the WCDS defense and emerged victorious in a one-on-one situation with the keeper.

"She finished the shot very well," said Heinemann. "(We) continued to fight through the final whistle, but there simply wasn't enough time left for them to gain any momentum back."

Faith Christian led in shots 11-10.

"Defender Georgia Tanner played her strongest game of the season," said Heinemann. "She was back by Caroline Lewis. Ultimately, I was considerably impressed with our defense today. (Keeper) Ellen Elmore performed beautifully."

Elmore finished with six saves.

Wayne Country Day (10-3-2, 6-1-1) entertains nemesis Greenfield on Friday. Kickoff is 4:45 p.m.
