WILSON -- After a third-place finish in the season-opening Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference golf meet last week, Southern Wayne claimed first Monday afternoon at Willow Springs Country Club.
Southern Wayne finished with a three-player score of 142. Wilson Hunt took second place with a 151 and Eastern Wayne carded a 156 total.
The Warriors' Jasmine Reeves captured individual medalist honors for the second time this season by firing a 40. Fellow Warrior Hannah Grantham fired a 55.
Taylor Reaves led the Saints' cause with a 44. Taylor Scott shot a 45, while Darian Edwards contributed a 53.
Lauren Larison (55) and Jessie Stewart (64) competed for Charles B. Aycock, which didn't have enough players to record a team score.
The Eastern Carolina 3-A teams will be back in action next Monday when they return to Wilson and tee-off at Wedgewood Country Club.
Volleyball
Hawks soar over Saints
DUDLEY -- North Lenoir kept its undefeated record intact as it spiked Southern Wayne 25-21, 25-15 25-22 on Monday afternoon.
Marissa Lanier led the Hawk attack with eight kills. Jordan Hudson dished out 22 assists.
Kristen Davenport led the victors with 22 service points.
North Lenoir (11-0 overall) travels to North Pitt today.
WCS victorious
Summer Brathwaithe led Wayne Christian with four kills as the Eagles downed Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Johnston Christian Academy 25-10, 25-9, 25-11 on Monday.
Kaitlyn Kosuda talled three kills and six aces for WCS. Haley Greenwood also contributed six aces.
Wayne Christian (10-3 overall) visits Greenville Christian on Friday.
Soccer
Warriors drop Saints
Eastern Wayne used a stirring second-half rally to knock of Southern Wayne 5-2 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams at Little Big Horn on Monday.
Sang Kim led the Warrior onslaught with two goals and an assist. Nick Bowden also found the net twice for Eastern Wayne, while teammate Nick Baker rounded out the scoring.
Southern Wayne jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Jesus Rodriguez and Ricardo Yanez, but could not sustain the offensive momentum.
Luis Castaneda recorded five saves in goal for the Saints.
Eastern Wayne (1-3 overall, 1-0 ECC) is the guest of state-ranked Wilson Hunt on Wednesday. Southern Wayne (1-3, 0-1) entertains Kinston next Monday.
Cougars score
TARBORO -- Goldsboro High School got on the board for the first time this season on a goal by Hosan Giron, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell to Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe Tarboro 5-1 on Monday.
Jason Horne recorded the assist Giron's goal.
Goldsboro (0-5 overall, 0-1 EPC) will play host to Greene Central on Wednesday.
Hawks prevail
LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Lane Sampley recorded nine saves as the Hawks defeated Farmville Central 4-3 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Monday.
The Hawks got two goals apiece from Grayson Phillips and Jamie Ellison. Chris Yourdan notched the game's only assist.
North Lenoir (6-3-1 overall, 1-0 EPC) entertains Tarboro on Wednesday.
Gators triumph
CLINTON -- Spring Creek bested Union 1-0 on the soccer pitch on Monday in a game that was stopped just after halftime due to lightning.
Ricardo Rangel scored the game's only goal to give the Gators the victory.
Spring Creek (5-0-1 overall) travels to Southern Wayne on Thursday.
Cross country
Eagles race to win
RALEIGH -- Wayne Christian's Josh Magnus paced the field in 17 minutes, 3 seconds as the Eagles won their fifth consecutive cross country meet of the season.
WCS finished with 24 points. Wake Christian took second-place honors in the five-team meet with 39 points.
Jordan Brathwaithe (18:19) and Connor Jones (18:44) finished second and third respectively for WCS.
Wayne Christian (5-0 overall) runs at Princeton on Friday.
Tennis
WCS aces Faith
ROCKY MOUNT -- Brooke Barfield, Faith Sutton, Reagan Hinton, and Jentry Carlyle each won in singles action as Wayne Christian defeated Faith Christian of Rocky Mount 7-2 on Monday.
The Eagles swept the doubles matches, with the teams of Barfield-Hinton, Faith Sutton-Carlyle and Savannah Sutton-Reaves each recording a victory.
Wayne Christian (5-1 overall) will host Cape Fear Christian today.
JV sports
* Tennis: Greene Central d. North Lenoir 9-0 -- Brittany Colie, Hayes Lovett, Meredith Carraway, Caroline Byrd, Dena Turnage and Melinda Suit each won in singles play for the Rams. The teams of Colie-Byrd, Lovett-Carraway and Turnage-Suit each prevailed in doubles.
* Tennis: Eastern Wayne d. Wayne Country Day 6-3 -- Kristen Baddour, Morgan Corbett, Leslie Wiggins, and Malissa Wiggins each won in singles play as Eastern Wayne bested Wayne Country Day on Monday. The teams of Morgan Jeffreys-Corbett and Baddour-Wiggins each emerged victorious in doubles action. Sarah Best and Mack Thompson each picked up singles points for WCDS.
Middle schools
* Volleyball: Norwayne d. Dillard 25-12, 25-10, 14-25, 25-10 -- Regan Herndon led Norwayne with 17 service points as the Cobras defeated Dillard. Emily Martin chipped in 11 service points. Dillard was led offensively by Pascelle Adams and Shekeira Campbell, both of whom finished with 12 service points. Norwayne is 2-0 overall.
* Volleyball: Spring Creek d. Grantham 25-23, 9-25, 25-11, 23-25, 15-10 -- Karen Best led the Gators with three aces as they bested Grantham in five games. Dorothy Brooks added 10 digs. Spring Creek improves to 2-0 overall.
