Warriors' Turner advances to quarterfinals in NCHSAA 3-A tournament

BURLINGTON -- Eastern Wayne freshman Russell Turner advanced to the quarterfinal round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A men's tennis championships at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Turner, the east regional runner-up, posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Union Pines' Dllon Rice. Turner's journey ended with a 6-0, 6-1 loss to Catholic's Kyle Johnson.
Charles B. Aycock junior Blake Vail claimed the opening set, but dropped a first-round decision to Jason Hull of Western Guilford. Hull rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Vail dropped to 0-3 in the state tournament.
On the doubles' side, the Golden Falcons' tandem of Addison Westbrook-Ben Nichols fell to Northern Guilford's Alex Southard-Logan Williams 6-2, 6-1.
Westbrook-Nichols finished second in the east this spring.
In 2-A action, Greene Central's Eric Simmons endured a first-round, 6-3, 6-2 loss to First Flight's Taylor Sulllivan.
The Rams' doubles of Colby Chase-Andrew Harrison suffered a 6-1, 6-1 setback against First Flight's Tommy Taylor-James Chase.
Aycock entertains Eastern Wayne in the eastern dual-team semifinals on Tuesday. The state-ranked Golden Falcons swept the regular-season series 6-3 and 5-4.
Turner defeated Vail in the east regional semifinals after suffering a loss to him in the ECC tournament championship match.
