Eastern Wayne did not get much going on offense against county rival Rosewood on Wednesday night, but the Warriors' defense made the effort stand up in a 1-0 victory.

In the 66th minute, Cady May converted a header off a free kick from Deborah Doran.

The Warriors controlled the ball and held the Eagles to just two shots on goal at Branch Pope Field.

Eastern Wayne (5-4-0 overall) entertains North Lenoir on April 12. Rosewood will also take time for spring break before playing host to North Johnston on April 14.

Chargers cruise

Sara Best logged a hat trick (three goals) and Wayne Country Day rolled past Ahoskie Ridgecroft, 7-2, in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference match.

Margaret Tanner, Mack Thompson, Mollie McDonald and Katherine Roethling tallied one goal apiece for the Chargers.

Wayne Country Day (6-2-0 overall, 3-0-0 CPIC) travels to long-time nemesis Greenfield today. Kickoff is 7 p.m.


Rams edge rival

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central held off a late charge from Eastern Plains 2-A Conference foe North Pitt and earned a 4-3 victory on Wednesday.

Wes Sowers claimed the win on the pitcher's mound.

Will Bynum led the Rams at the plate with two hits. Trent Murray and John Nethercutt each added a double and one RBI respectively.

Greene Central (7-3 overall, 4-1 EPC) travels to South Central on Friday.


Hawks soar

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir snuck past South Johnston 3-2 in a battle of Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference newcomers.

Aaryn Deal struck out five Trojans to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.

Amber Best finished with two hits for the Hawks. Ashley Doughty added one hit and two RBI.

North Lenoir (7-4 overall, 2-2 ECC) visits county archrival South Lenoir on April 9.

Saints cruise

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne got off to a hot start and never looked back in its 10-4, non-conference win over Kinston on Wednesday afternoon.

Madison Davis struck out 12 batters to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.

Davis also paced the victors at the plate with four hits and two RBI. Taylor Davis added three hits and three RBI. Kayla Gracyk tallied two hits.

Southern Wayne (2-9 overall) travels to Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference rival Eastern Wayne tonight.


Warriors roll

FOUR OAKS -- Eastern Wayne cruised to a 5-1 victory over South Johnston on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tennis scene Wednesday.

Chaz Fitzpatrick, Aaron Dunmire, Mike Barnette, Joe DiCesare and Carson Daly each earned a point in singles play.

The doubles matches were not contested.

The Warriors (9-1 overall, 5-1 ECC) entertains Triton on April 12.

Eagles lasso Chargers

AYDEN -- Rosewood opened its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule with a 7-2 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Travis Cuddington, Matt Binda, Antonio Henriques, Zach Behrend and Daniel Elawar were all winners in singles play for the Eagles.

The tandems of Binda-Henriques and Behrend-Elawar were victorious in doubles play.

Rosewood improved to 6-0 overall.

Track and field

Carolina 1-A meet

Princeton claimed six first-place finishes en route to a victory over Goldsboro and Rosewood on the Carolina 1-A Conference track scene Wednesday.

The Dawgs racked up 70 points, while the Cougars finished with 59 and the Eagles tallied 57.

On the girls' side, Rosewood prevailed with 85 team points. Princeton finished with 50 and Goldsboro followed with 42.
