Princeton 10, Smithfield-Selma 0

* PRINCETON -- Traci Bridgers came within one runner of recording a perfect game, and Princeton hammered county rival Smithfield-Selma, 10-0.

Bridgers logged 11 strikeouts inside the pitcher's circle and allowed one SSS runner to reach base on an error. The right-hander helped the Bulldogs even their record at 1-1 this season.

Megan Gerrell, Tori Paul and Katlyn Peedin cranked out two hits apiece for Princeton. Bridgers, Keely Myers, Savanna Massengill and Nicole Melvin each provided one hit in the mercy rule-shortened contest.

Princeton entertains Wilson Fike on Tuesday.

Walnut Creek Ladies Association

* Charlotte Campbell claimed low gross honors during weekly tournament play on the Walnut Creek Country Club links. Joyce Reynolds and Penny Ritt seized low net and low putts, respectively.

(Editor's note: Ritt's name was spelled incorrectly in the original brief that appeared in Wednesday's edition of the News-Argus.)

JV sports

* Baseball: C.B. Aycock 6, Wilson Hunt 5 -- The Golden Falcons' Avery Anderson emerged the winning pitcher and Ryan Grant earned the save with two innings of four-strikeout scoreless relief. Hunter Jones belted a two-run home run in three at-bats. Logan Brown (two RBI) and Rider Gardner added one hit apiece. Aycock (4-0 overall) travels to North Lenoir today.
