Aycock sweeps West Craven

* Logan Brown swatted four hits in the opener, and Ben Rouse threw a complete-game, three-hitter in the nightcap during Charles B. Aycock's doubleheader sweep of West Craven on Sunday.

Aycock won the opener 8-3 and claimed the nightcap 8-1.

Brown drove in one run in game one. Gregory Johnson (RBI) contributed three hits. Rouse (RBI), Noah West (RBI) and Rider Gardner cranked out two hits apiece.

Hank Smitherman supplied two RBI.

Bobby Hampton and Ryan Grant combined for an eight-hitter on the mound. Hampton logged four strikeouts in three-plus innings. Grant, who claimed the pitching win, fanned three West Craven batters in 4 1/3 innings of action.

Smitherman (two RBI), Garrett Joyner (RBI) and Tim Naughton (two RBI) combined for six hits in game two. Johnson batted 1-for-1 with an RBI.

Rouse logged two strikeouts.

Aycock (15-5 overall) travels to Spring Creek today. First pitch is 6 p.m. at "The Swamp."


WC Blazers finish 2-1

* DURHAM -- Turnovers against a full-court press proved costly as the Wayne County Blazers 12-Under AAU squad suffered a 59-50 loss to New Generation in the N.C. Runnin' Rebels Summer Shootout contested at Norther Durham.

DJ Waters paced the Blazers' offense with 11 points. PJ Hill contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Y'Oente Royal and Justin Lofton-Russell provided seven and six points, respectively. Each player pulled down seven boards.

Wayne County started pool play with a 41-33 victory over New Generation. Isaiah Hatchett emerged the top scorer with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Waters and Hill collected nine and eight points, respectively.

Jacob Norris collected eight rebounds.

The Blazers clinched the game with a 9 for 13 effort at the free throw line.

Aaron Smith poured in 12 points and Hatchett added 11 in Wayne County's 54-51 triumph over the Wendell Rams in their second pool game. Waters recorded six steals and Royal cleaned the glass for nine rebounds.

Hatchett drained five consecutive free throws down the stretch.
