GREENSBORO -- PJ Hill suffered a tournament-ending injury in the second game and the Wayne County Blazers AAU 13-year-old squad logged a 2-2 worksheet during the USSSA State Basketball Tournament contested at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Hill collected eight points and dished out four assists in the Blazers' tournament-opening, 62-46 triumph over Davie Fastbreak. Elijah Bryant contributed a team-high 13 points and snared five rebounds.
Isaiah Hatchett recorded 11 points and three assists, while Damien Darden registered eight points and three steals. Jacob Norris added eight points and grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
"(It was a) team effort on both ends of the court," Blazers head coach Danny Norris said.
Wayne County knocked off the Carolina Cougars, 47-41, in its second game and had to work the second half without Hill, who was involved in a first-half collision that sidelined him for the remainder of the weekend. Darden and Jacob Norris tallied 12 points apiece and combined for 10 rebounds.
Hatchett chipped in six points and picked the Cougars for three steals.
The Sandhills Cyclones drained pivotal free throws in the closing stages and handed the Blazers their first defeat, 61-52. Darden pumped in 14 points and pulled down four rebounds. Hatchett (four assists) and Darrian Oates (three assists) logged 14 and 10 points, respectively.
DJ Waters provided eight points.
The Blazers' weekend run ended with a 50-31 loss to Carolina Crossover from Greensboro. Wayne County managed just two points in the opening 10 minutes and trailed 25-12 at halftime.
Darden and Hatchett each scored seven points.
"(We) missed the leadership and control that PJ brings to the team," said coach Norris.
Wayne County (9-9 overall) returns to action June 8 in the USBA Total Package Showcase in Durham.
