Boys' basketball

C.B. Aycock 67, Triton 62

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock upset defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season champion Triton, 67-62, in overtime on Friday evening.

A.J. Mundle led the way for the Golden Falcons with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Williams added 16 points and nine boards. Greg Williams emerged the third double-figure scorer for C.B. Aycock with 10 points.

Maurice McBryde paced Triton with 25 points.

C.B. Aycock (7-9, 2-3 ECC) travels to North Lenoir on Tuesday night.

Wayne Country Day 77,

Greenfield 63

* WILSON -- Wayne Country Day used a potent offensive attack to down Coastal Plains Independent 1-A archrival Greenfield, 77-63, on Friday night.

The Knights entered the game ranked No. 3 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll.

Deshar Thomas led the Chargers with 25 points and seven rebounds. Lee Atkinson added 17 points and 14 assists. Joel Davis finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Wayne Country Day (11-4, 3-1 CPIC) entertains Pope John Paul on Tuesday.

Ayden-Grifton 57,

North Duplin 38

* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton held North Duplin to just 16 points in the first half en route to a 57-38 victory in Carolina 1-A Conference play on Friday night.

Rondell Bell led a trio of Chargers in double figures with 17 points. Geremy Dixon added 11 and Phe'Bein Joyner 10 in the win.

Daron Goodman and Cody Ivey led the way for North Duplin with eight points apiece.

North Duplin (1-13, 0-2 CC) plays host to Princeton on Tuesday night.

Cresset Christian 93,

Wayne Christian 47

* DURHAM -- Cresset Christian had two players reach the 30-point mark in a 93-47 win over Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Wayne Christian on Friday night.

Shawn Lipscombe led Cresset with 33 points, while Sherwood Young added 32.

Bryce Webber paced Wayne Christian with 18 points and five rebounds. Chris Easom tallied 11 points and three assists.

Wayne Christian (1-16) visits Lee Christian on Jan. 25.

Girls' basketball

Rosewood 54, Spring Creek 27

* SEVEN SPRINGS -- Rosewood improved to 2-0 in Carolina 1-A Conference play with a 54-27 victory at Spring Creek on Friday evening.

Lexi Mercer paced the Eagles with 18 points. Alicia Burns had 13 points.

"We made some switches in personnel in where we have girls," Rosewood head coach Ryan Wells said. "The balance is great. When you see the averages of one player scoring 15 points a game and the next player is at 13, you can't just do those quirky things to slow us down that teams have tried in the past."

Alyssa Borja scored 15 points for Spring Creek.

The Eagles (8-4, 2-0 CC) visit Goldsboro on Tuesday night. The Gators entertain the Cougars on Jan. 25.

C.B. Aycock 51, Triton 47

* PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock scored the last six points of the game in the final minute of regulation and defeated Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Triton 51-47 on Friday night.

Quanika Artis tied the game with a layup with 40 seconds to play and put the Golden Falcons ahead for good with a basket 20 seconds later.

Artis led C.B. Aycock with 16 points. Taylor Daniels added 14 in the win.

C.B. Aycock (5-11, 2-3 ECC) travels to North Lenoir on Tuesday.

Goldsboro 46, Princeton 20

* PRINCETON -- Goldsboro overcame a slow start and defeated Princeton 46-20 on the Carolina 1-A Conference basketball scene Friday night.

The Cougars opened up a 9-2 lead after one quarter, but struggled as Princeton cut the advantage to just four points late in the second period. A 3-pointer by Talaya Lassiter and a putback by Brandy Johnson extended the Goldsboro lead before the intermission and the Bulldogs never threatened again.

Lassiter emerged as the only Goldsboro player in double figures with 13 points. Johnson, Destini Covington and Tyona Moses each added six points.

Savanna Massengill paced the Princeton offense with eight points.

Princeton (7-6, 1-1 CC) is the guest of North Duplin on Tuesday night, while Goldsboro (7-5, 2-0) plays host to Rosewood.

Ayden-Grifton 64,

North Duplin 24

* AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton pulled ahead by double digits in the first quarter and never looked back in a 64-24 win over Carolina 1-A Conference foe North Duplin on Friday night.

Deja Aycock led the Rebels with 12 points. Shaily McCarty added eight points in the defeat.

North Duplin (1-13, 0-2 CC) plays host to Princeton on Tuesday night.

Faith Christian 47, Tabernacle 36

* Faith Christian earned its second win of the season with a 47-36 triumph over N.C. Christian Schools Association foe Tabernacle Christian out of Monroe on Friday night.

Hannah Stocks led the Conquerors with 15 points. Abigail Pierce added 14 points and Morgan Hoskins tallied eight points.

Faith Christian (2-11) travels to Wilson Christian on Tuesday.


Eagles post 4-0 record

* Seven grapplers logged unbeaten worksheets and Rosewood pinned 20 opponents in 26 contested individual matches as a team during a non-conference, multi-team event Friday evening.

The Eagles knocked off Greene Central (66-18), Southeast Raleigh (62-15), Tarboro (60-18) and Wilson Fike (53-21).

The sophomore tandem of Sam and Joshua Drew, senior Nick Quillen, Syheeim Peterson, Nick Lowrey and Malique Boyd each registered a 4-0 record. Quillen improved to 37-1 overall and has won 98 of his last 99 outings.

Senior Angel Jaramillo concluded the night 3-0.

Freshman Matt Cruz (34-4), Evan Reiss and Kaleb Smith had three wins apiece. Teammates Dylan Melgar, Blake Dean, Chad Keefer and Rayquon Jones also had their hand raised in victory.

Rosewood (27-10) plays host to Princeton and Southern Nash on Jan. 24.

JV sports

* Boys' basketball: Goldsboro 78, Princeton 44 -- Andre Castille paced Goldsboro with 12 points. Eric Bufkin added 11 points and Nashir Bowden added 10 in the win. Goldsboro plays host to Rosewood on Tuesday night.

* Boys' basketball: Eastern Wayne 62, South Johnston 28 -- The Warriors' Zeke Martin posted a double-double -- 10 points, 10 rebounds -- in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference game. Dameko Artis contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. TJ Hall chipped in eight points and picked the Trojans for two steals. Darian Applewhite added seven points and five assists. Eastern Wayne (12-4, 4-2 ECC) entertains Cleveland on Tuesday.

* Girls' basketball: Eastern Wayne 40, South Johnston 13 -- Curyna Chase led Eastern Wayne with 10 points. Casey Young added eight points in the win. Eastern Wayne plays host to Cleveland on Tuesday.
