PIKEVILLE -- Overnight right prompted athletics directors from Eastern Wayne, Charles B. Aycock and Southern Wayne to cancel the 3-A portion of the Eastern Carolina Conference tennis tournament.
The group elected to send the tournament's top two singles and top two doubles teams to the N.C. High School Athletic Association eastern regional, which begins Oct. 18 at Barton College in Wilson.
The No. 1 singles is Aycock's Ashton Walker, while the No. 2 singles is Southern Wayne's Hope Jones. Eastern Wayne is taking its No. 1 doubles of cousins Faith and Savannah Sutton, and No. 2 duo of sisters McKenna and Cameron Dove.
It's the first time in league history the tournament was canceled due to inclement weather. Four years ago, the singles and doubles championships were not contested due to rain.
