UMO -- Weekend digest

MISENHEIMER -- No. 5-ranked University of Mount Olive remained unbeaten in Conference Carolinas play with a three-game sweep 7-5, 5-2, 17-10 of in-state rival Pfeiffer University.

It's the final meeting between the two schools. Pfeifferwill depart for the Division IIranks after this season.

Game 3 -- Zach Mozingo, Drew Ellis and Tony Salvaggio each drilled a home run as the Trojans rallied from an early 2-0 deficit after one inning of play.

Justin Carroll batted 4-for-4 with three RBI. Trae Sweeting (three RBI), Ricky Surum (RBI), Ellis (two RBI) and Salvaggio (four RBI) each provided two hits.

Mozingo ended the day 1-for-3.

David Mayo batted 1-for-4 with three walks and four runs scored.

UMOhad 16 hits as a team.

Brighton Hudson (4-0) started and allowed five earned runs on eight hits and two walks in 41/3 innings. Trey Pate, Ethan Horne, Zach Vennaro and German Reyes appeared out of the bullpen. The quartet combined for 22/3 innings of six-hit, three-strikeout relief.

Game 2 -- Tied at 2-2 after eight innings, Alvin Swoope drew a one-out walk. Sweeting singled with two outs, which set the table for Surum's game-deciding, three-run homer.

Surum, Sweeting and Jose Lopez accounted for all of UMO's six hits. Sweeting and Lopez each had one RBI.

Austin Hutchison (7-0) surrendered two earned runs on seven its and retired five Falcons on strikeouts during an eight-inning stint. Zach Mozingo hurled one inning of one-hit strikeout relief for his conference-leading sixth save of the season.

Game 1 -- Mozingo's sixth-inning, two-out RBI single broke a scoreless tie. Following a walk, Bradley Ragan drove home Mozingo and scored on a Pfeiffer throwing error.

Lopez and Drew Ellis each rapped out an RBI single in the seventh inning. Pfeiffer climbed to within 6-4 and 7-5, but couldn't hand the Trojans their first league defeat of the season.

Bruce Zimmerman (5-0) worked seven complete innings. He gave up six hits, two walks and fanned eight Falcons.

The Trojans (23-5, 12-0 CC) travel to Peach Belt member Armstrong State (Ga.) University on Monday.


Men's tennis

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive claimed all three doubles points and upended Edinboro (Pa.) University 8-1 in non-conference play.

Top-seeded Jose Cortijos-Martim Sousa, second-seeded Jacob Clarke-Juan Arbelaez and third-seeded Ogulcan Deniz-Martin Moser each emerged victorious.

The Trojans (8-2 overall) won five of six singles matches.


Men's volleyball

MISENHEIMER -- Bret Rutledge pounded out a match-high 18 kills as University of Mount Olive swept in-state rival Pfeiffer University 25-22, 25-22, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon.

Robert Poole added nine kills for the Trojans, who improved to 14-6 overall and 11-1 against league opposition this season. UMO posted 39 kills as a team and hit .333 during the three-set affair.

Jeff Yasalonis dished out 24 assists. Shane Yeo and Josh Donahue combined for 14 assists. Donahue led the defense with 11 digs.

The Trojans started their weekend road swing with a 25-18, 26-28, 25-18, 25-17 triumph over Emmanuel (Ga.) College. Poole torched the Lions' defense for 19 kills, while Brad Monaghan knocked down a career-high 18 kills.

Yasalonis handed out 53 assists.

Donahue registered 12 digs.


Men's lacrosse

BELMONT -- No. 6-ranked Belmont Abbey scored the first nine goals within a 38-minute stretch and dealt No. 10-ranked University of Mount Olive a 16-4 loss in Conference Carolinas play Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans (5-2 overall, 0-1 CC) lost for the second time in their last three outings.

Cody Graden put UMO on the board with a goal off of Eddie Hendrickson's assist with 11:40 left in the third quarter. Davyd Powell punched in an unassisted goal 66 seconds later.

Thatcher Clark and Tim Collins each tallied a fourth-quarter goal for UMO.

Trojan goalies Will Urban (5-2) and Drew Yost combined for 13 saves.


Women's tennis

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Edinboro (Pa.) University won two of three doubles matches and rode the momentum to a 6-3, non-conference triumph over University of Mount Olive.

The Trojans' tandem of senior Stella Di Michelle and sophomore Julie Gonzalez-Rodriguez pulled off an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Di Michelle and Gonzalez-Rodriguez each secured a singles point. Gonzalez-Rodriguez rallied for a 6-3, 6-7, 10-7 win.

Edinboro seized four singles points to seal the outcome.


Women's lacrosse

MOUNT OLIVE -- Nationally-ranked Limestone (S.C.) College rallied from a two-goal deficit and turned back University of Mount Olive, 10-9, on a rainy Saturday at the Ray McDonald Sr. Track & Field/Lacrosse Complex.

The Saints sealed the outcome with a man-up goal by Marina Jozokos with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.

Saffron Snethen emerged as the Trojans' leading scorer with a five-goal outing. Kiara Burke scored twice. Jackie Kaderabek contributed one goal and one assist.

Micheala Ciciarelli had one goal.

Keeper Samantha Thompson (3-3) had four saves.



CENTRAL, S.C. -- University of Mount Olive's Emily Chaisson hurled a complete-game, three-hitter during a 13-3, mercy-rule win over Southern Wesleyan in the nightcap of their Conference Carolinas twinbill Saturday afternoon.

Chaisson walked two, struck out two and allowed three runs (two earned).

Karen Foley (RBI), Kristin Power (two RBI), Kayla Allen and Anna Ingram (RBI) each registered two hits. Caitlin Ewers (RBI), Callie Ferrell (RBI), Charlene Thompson (RBI) and North Duplin grad Mikayla Koch each added one hit.

Kelsey Hayes and JenniBeth Burge each scored a run.

SWU won the opener, 13-1, in five innings.

The Trojans split a twinbill with North Greenville on Friday, taking the opener 2-1 and falling 3-1 in the nightcap.

In game one, Allen collected a first-inning RBI and freshman Hayes scored on Burge's RBI single in the fourth inning.

A freshman, Foley (2-8) threw a one-hitter and fanned six NGU batters inside the circle.

In game two, Allen, Foley and Ingram each had one hit.
