The West Brunswick girls tennis team will be the first team to play on the new Trojan tennis courts on the Shallotte campus this week.

The team was scheduled to host back-to-back-to back matches this week, starting with North Brunswick on Tuesday, Sept. 13, South Columbus on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and New Hanover on Thursday, Sept. 15.

The Trojans have started the season 0-4 playing matches against Hoggard and Ashley at Ocean Isle Beach Park and traveling to Wilmington and Hampstead to face Laney and Topsail.

Trojan tennis head coach Scott Mehalick said he started the season with the top five remaining players he had from last season.

“We have 15 (total). We have nine back from last year and six newcomers. We have a lot of seniors this year, so we’re looking for a lot of competitive games against everybody,” Mehalick said.

“Maddy Bland is at No. 1. She’s a senior. Bryanna Dickens is at No. 2. She’s a sophomore. Lonna Ward is at No.3. She’s a senior. Olivia Mehalick is at No. 4. She’s a senior. Cassidy Grant, she’s No. 5. She’s a senior. And then Grace Watson, who just joined us this year, playing No. 6.”

He added they have some girls on the team from last year that have moved up from where they were.

“It’s still going to be a couple of weeks before we figure out who’s where. Right now we’re just going on past history and what we’ve seen,” Mehalick said.

West tennis includes three more returning players and three new ones who could move into the singles or doubles rotation.

“They’ve been around tennis. Their sisters played. Their parents have played. Hannah Uderwood, she’s playing No. 7 right now. Hannah Cumbee. Then Aley Williams and Ava Williams, her younger sister. Marissa Nance, who was on the team last year. And Kyleigh Mahaffey, she played two years ago. She’s a senior. She was more involved in band last year. But she’s back this year.”
