The West Brunswick JV girls’ basketball team enjoyed a rare week with two games on the schedule, making the most of a home game on Tuesday, Jan. 24 by beating Laney 24-14.
West’s Maddie Richardson matched Laney’s scoring in the first quarter with four points while the Trojans took an 8-4 lead with a basket by Abby Wilkes and 2-2 free throw shooting from Kelsey Lykins.
In the second quarter, each team could only find four points, but West kept the lead 12-8 at the half.
The third period saw more defensive plays than offensive scoring with West having a 4-3 advantage in points to add to their lead 16-11.
The Trojans kept Laney to just three more points in the fourth and secured the win with eight points coming from Wilkes, Richardson and Lilly Simmons to finish the game out with the 24-14 win.
Richardson led the Trojans with eight points. Wilkes finished with six points. Lykins scored four points. Tara Jones had three points in the game.
Ashley 27, West Brunswick 15
West Brunswick fell behind Ashley 12-8 in the first period of Friday’s game after the Screaming Eagles hit three 3-point shots. West kept it close with four points from Nevaeh Williams and baskets by Autumn Wyatt and Ahyanna Jackson.
But the Trojans fell further behind when they could not score in the second quarter while Ashley hit another 3-pointer that led to a 16-8 score at halftime.
Williams hit a 3-point shot in the third and Wilkes also scored for West but the Eagles still outscored the Trojans with an eight-point quarter to go up 24-13.
West couldn’t cut into the lead in the fourth as scoring ground down to just two free throws by Wyatt and Wilkes. Ashley added three points at the free throw line to make it a 27-15 final.
Williams had seven points for West. Wilkes and Wyatt each added three points and Jackson finished with two points.
The Trojan JV girls were scheduled for a Tuesday, Jan. 31 home game with Topsail and then have to wait until Tuesday, Feb. 7 to travel to Wilmington to play New Hanover at 4 p.m.
