Tammy Schrenker, director of the Wayne County Department of Social Services, is resigning.

Schrenker, who joined Wayne County DSS in 2017, plans to remain as director until May 24.

Schrenker made the announcement Monday during the Department of Social Services’ regular board meeting

Commissioner Ray Mayo, chairman of the Wayne County DSS board, said it was a difficult decision for Schrenker.

“But we are thrilled that she will be closer to her family,” Mayo said in an email. “Though Tammy will be greatly missed, she leaves us better than when she came here two years ago. We wish her the very best in her future endeavors.”

Craig Honeycutt, Wayne County manager, said Schrenker’s service and leadership to Wayne County were appreciated.

“Tammy took us through organizational changes, and made our organization much stronger than when she arrived,” Honeycutt said in a prepared statement. “She has positioned the Wayne County Department of Social Services to be stronger as we move towards the future.”

Schrenker said she appreciated the support of the DSS board, the Board of Commissioners, the county manager and all of her staff.

“My time in Wayne County has been great,” she said. “This was a very hard decision, but I know the Department of Social Services will continue to progress after I am gone.”
