Wayne County sheriff’s deputies arrested a Dudley woman on multiple felony counts of embezzlement Friday.
Deputies arrested and charged Cynthia Kornegay, 46, of Pecan Road, Dudley, with 18 felony counts of embezzlement and 18 felony counts of larceny by employee.
A report of missing cash from the Genoa Mart, at 659 Genoa Road in Dudley, triggered a embezzlement investigation into whether an employee was taking money from the business, said Capt. Shawn Harris, with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
A Genoa Mart worker filed a report with the sheriff’s office on March 22 after examining store sales records and comparing cash transactions. Deputies then took over the investigation, which covered a five-month period to establish evidence to file the 36 charges, Harris said.
“She was converting money from the business to her own use,” Harris said. “We don’t know the total because the case is still under investigation right now.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the charges filed are preliminary, Harris said. Deputies are going back even further than the past five months to compare records, but Harris does not know if additional charges will be filed or how in-depth the investigation will go.
While the deputies do not have a total amount of cash taken, Harris said it was small amounts at a time.
Kornegay was booked at the Wayne County jail under a $54,000 secured bond.
