A Wayne County grand jury indicted three men on first-degree murder charges in the fatal shooting of a Seven Springs teenager.
Devon Alexander McCollum, 24, of Green Street, Snow Hill; Videll Alexander Wright, 19, of Sedgefield Drive; and Terrance Corainte Smith, 23, of County Line Road, LaGrange, face first-degree murder charges for the death of 17-year-old Carl Patrick Henry Leroy Jr.
McCollum, Wright and Smith’s first appearances are May 7 in Wayne County Superior Court.
In addition to first-degree murder, McCollum, Wright and Smith were indicted on charges of robbery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm into an occupied property resulting in serious bodily injury and conspiracy to discharge a firearm into an occupied property resulting in serious bodily injury.
Wayne County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting on Sanderson Road, Seven Springs, around 10:55 p.m. on Aug. 11. Upon arrival, deputies found Leroy suffering from a gunshot wound to the hip across the street on Pioneer Trails Drive in a 2008 Toyota pickup, according to a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office search warrant application.
Leroy’s father, Shannon Patrick, reportedly told deputies he heard several gunshots from outside his residence, according to the warrant. A second witness, Aaron Wiseman, told deputies he was inside the trailer when he heard eight to 10 gunshots.
Emergency Medical Services personnel pronounced Leroy dead shortly after arriving on scene.
During the investigation, deputies learned McCollum allegedly owned a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu that pulled up to a local gun store on Aug. 17, and a witness noticed multiple holes in the passenger side of the vehicle, according to the search warrant application.
Wright was allegedly in contact with Leroy the night of the shooting, and Wright was seen riding in a vehicle similar to the Chevrolet Malibu that “may have had bullet holes in it,” according to the application.
Members of the Wayne County SWAT Team executed a separate search warrant Aug. 22 on Force Road regarding the sale of drugs from the house on Aug. 21, according to the application. Deputies said McCollum and Wright were allegedly seen at the house on Aug. 21.
Members of the SWAT Team found a .762-caliber pistol in a pile of clothes near the bed where McCollum was laying, the application continues. The ammo used in the found pistol are consistent with shell casings found at the scene of the Aug. 11 fatal shooting.
SWAT Team members also found cocaine during the search of the house, according to the search warrant application.
McCollum and Wright were arrested on outstanding warrants on Aug. 22.
Deputies confirmed the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu registered to McCollum and was the vehicle allegedly used driven during the Aug. 11 shooting, the application reads.
A grand jury indicted McCollum and Wright on multiple drug charges from the Aug. 22 search warrant execution.
McCollum was also indicted on a possession of firearm by convicted felon charge. According to the indictment, McCollum was convicted of a felony on Dec. 18, 2014 in Lenoir County Superior Court. McCollum also has first-degree kidnapping and assault on a female charges pending in Wayne County District Court stemming from an 2017 case.
