Two Goldsboro men died after a pickup truck went off the road and crashed into a tree after traveling at a high rate of speed.
Pedro Daniel Ponce-Hernandez, 22, was driving south at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning on U.S. 13 near Brantwood Drive before the truck ran off the road, partially overturned and slammed into a tree, said 1st Sgt. K.W. Milligan, with the N.C. Highway Patrol in Wayne County.
Ponce-Hernandez and passenger Leonardo Aguirre-Onate, 18, both of Goldsboro, died in the wreck, he said.
Milligan said that speed was a factor that led to the fatal accident due to Ponce-Hernandez driving at a high rate of speed before the pickup truck went off the road.
“We just know that speed was a factor at this point,” Milligan said. “Just by looking at the report, it looks like it just ran off the road to the right and partially overturned and collided with a tree.”
The investigation is ongoing.
