Three homes across from Berkeley Mall have been demolished to make way for a tire store.
Construction of a Discount Tire is expected to begin next week, but a timeline for completion is still to be determined, said Donnie Schultz, superintendent with Metrolina Builders of Charlotte.
“We’re finishing demo today, and we’re going to start on construction and erosion control,” Schultz said Monday.
The homes were located at 700, 702 and 704 North Berkeley Blvd., according to LaToya Henry, Goldsboro’s public information officer.
Henry said the three lots, which are 18,500 square feet each, have been recombined into one property totaling 55,500 square feet or 1.27 acres.
Henry said a recombination land survey, which was approved by city planning staff, does not require Goldsboro City Council approval.
Construction of the future 10,847-square-foot Discount Tire is estimated at $950,000, Henry said.
City planning documents show the tire store will have three service bays and a total of 40 parking spaces.
The business will face Berkeley Boulevard with a full driveway access from Langston Drive and a right-in, right-out only from North Berkeley Boulevard.
Once construction is completed, Discount Tire will be open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The company plans to hire 15 workers, according to city planning documents.
North Berkeley Boulevard is one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and remains a prime location for businesses, even throughout the pandemic.
Directly beside where Discount Tire is going is Take 5 Oil Change, a quick service oil change business.
Construction of the 1,500-square-foot facility at 606 N. Berkeley Blvd. was completed in June, according to Matthew Marflake, project manager with Durban Development, the parent company of Goldsboro Take Five.
The business also features three service bays, which allows oil change service to three customers at the same time.
In March, Rocket Wash, a space-themed car wash business, opened its doors at 508 N. Berkeley Blvd.
The business features the latest automated car washing technologies with free use of vacuums, cleaning products and towels.
Construction on the $1.4 million, 2,500-square-foot facility began in June of 2020.
Across from the automotive-related businesses is the Berkeley Mall, a Wells Fargo bank and several popular eateries.
North Berkeley Boulevard is also home to grocer Aldi which opened its 23,574-square-foot store in June at 1203 N. Berkeley Blvd. in Berkeley Commons, across from the Lowe’s Home Improvement store.
Within months of the 2020 closing of the former Bed Bath and Beyond store, Aldi started renovating the building in the Berkeley Commons.
The cost to renovate the 23,574-square-foot building was estimated at $1.1 million.
