Dick’s Sporting Goods store manager Mike Piotrowski presented Eastern Wayne Middle School athletic director Jennifer Fricks with a check for $10,000 made out to the school’s athletic department.
The money awarded to the school from the sporting goods store came through a grant that Dick’s offers for athletic programs in need of new equipment.
Physical education teacher, head baseball coach and head soccer coach Donta Lewis was the first one to reach out to Dick’s about their need of athletic equipment, Fricks said, during a presentation at Eastern Wayne Middle on Tuesday.
Lewis said the main reason he reached out to Dick’s about a grant was that players on many of the school’s sports teams didn’t have the equipment they needed, and they sometimes had to borrow equipment from other schools.
“We had to borrow equipment from other schools, such as our football gear,” Lewis said. “I reached to the Dick’s Sporting Goods manager at Goldsboro, North Carolina, and we set up a meeting to do a proposal, and corporate granted us $10,000.”
Fricks said she believes the new athletic equipment they will be able to purchase with the grant will help increase participation for the school’s sports teams.
“With this grant we are going to be able to have all of the equipment we need for practices and for games,” Fricks said.
“(We will also) be able to encourage students to come out because when they have nice things and they have the proper equipment, they are going to want to participate and they are going to take pride in what they do.”
