A Goldsboro man made his first court appearance Thursday on multiple child pornography charges.

Kenneth Ray McCullen, 49, of South Berkeley Boulevard, was arrested Wednesday and charged with nine felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, related to McCullen allegedly duplicating child pornography, according to deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

Wayne County deputies arrested McCullen as part of an investigation that was led by the State Bureau of Investigation, said Maj. Richard Lewis, of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation and arrest happened after a cybertip was sent to the SBI Center for Missing and Exploited Children, deputies said.

McCullen, who only has a misdemeanor trespassing charge from 2007 and a vehicle registration offense from 2004 on his record, was jailed in the Wayne County Detention Center under $500,000 secured bond.

“When you look at the charges he has and now this, it just shows that people are unpredictable,” Lewis said. “You never know what someone may be doing behind closed doors.”

Lewis said reports such as the one involving McCullen are not rare, but are also not unheard of in Wayne County.

“We don’t have that many cases in this county,” he said. “It does happen, though.”

McCullen’s next appearance in the case is scheduled for Monday in District Court in Goldsboro.
