A Goldsboro man died over the weekend while working on a shed in his yard.
Alex Economy, 64, of 320 Longs Plant Farm Road, died Sunday after a shed on which he was working fell on him, said Joel Gillie, Wayne County public information officer.
Economy’s neighbors told authorities the accident happened as Economy was trying to lower the portable shed into his yard using jacks and cinder blocks. As Economy was trying to move the structure, it shifted from its supports and fell on him, Gillie said.
Economy was pronounced dead on scene when first responders arrived. Personnel from Wayne County Emergency Medical Services, Elroy Volunteer Fire Department and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
The structure shifted due to the ground beneath it being soft, Gillie said.
“It wasn’t from rain,” he said. “It was just wet and weak as a result. It caused the shed to shift and fall.”
Aaron Stryker, Wayne County Emergency Management coordinator, said the agency does not receive many calls like the one involving Economy.
“That would be out of the ordinary for our agency,” said Stryker. “I have not heard much of those events happening in and around Wayne County.”
