The Rev. Jerry Grimes of Goldsboro has received the Weiss Urban Livability Program Doctoral Fellowship for the 2021-22 school year at the University of North Carolina.

The program provides him with a $15,700 stipend. The graduate school will supplement this with an award of $4,000. The stipend includes tuition, fees and student health insurance, which brings the total value of the fellowship to $50,000.

Grimes was chosen out of several scholars, policymakers and innovators, his award letter stated.

He is a 1996 graduate of Goldsboro High School. He taught at North Carolina Wesleyan College for 10 years, and was recently senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church of Glenwood in the Chicago area.

Upon receiving the Weiss Fellowship, Grimes returned to North Carolina to start his fellowship this fall.
