A Goldsboro man accused of stealing a car was hospitalized Tuesday after leading police on a high-speed chase through downtown Goldsboro and crashing the car he was driving.
Erik Jamell Hamilton, 21, of Edgerton Street, is charged with felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of up to half an ounce of marijuana and resisting a public officer, according to a Goldsboro police report.
The vehicle chase happened at 11:13 p.m. Tuesday at Atlantic Avenue after police recognized a 2008 Dodge Avenger that had been reported stolen earlier in the day by its owner, a 63-year-old woman. The woman told police the vehicle theft happened between 1 p.m. and 1:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Speedway gas station at 400 E. Ash St.
Police tried to stop the car when they recognized it as the one reported stolen earlier in the day. Instead, the driver drove away to John Street toward Royall Avenue where the three roads intersect.
The car Hamilton is accused of stealing reached a top speed of 60 mph during the chase, according to a Goldsboro police crash report. The posted speed limit in the area where the crash happened is 35 mph.
The vehicle chase ended at the intersection of John Street and Atlantic Avenue when the car ran off the road and onto the railroad tracks near the intersection.
The damage to the car was estimated to be $5,000, according to the Goldsboro police report.
Hamilton got out of the car and tried to run away after it crashed, but police managed to catch and arrest him, according to the crash report.
Hamilton was taken to UNC Health Wayne to be treated for injuries he sustained in the crash before he was arrested and charged.
State court records did not list Hamilton’s next court appearance in the case as of Wednesday.
