A homeless man walking along the railroad tracks near Royall Avenue Thursday night was struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern Railroad train.

Michael Allen Wheaton, 28, listed by police as living on the streets of Goldsboro, was walking west along the tracks alongside Royall Avenue, between Spence Avenue and Sunburst Drive, Thursday at about 9 p.m., said LaToya Henry, Goldsboro public information officer.

“Witnesses stated that Wheaton was walking west on the railroad tracks, as a freight train approached traveling west,” Henry said. “The train was blowing the horn and Wheaton acted as if he did not hear the train coming behind him until the last second.

“Wheaton then turned around and was struck by the train.”

Goldsboro police and firefighters and Wayne County Emergency Medical Service personnel responded to the scene and found Wheaton’s body on the south side of the tracks between the railroad tracks and a nearby wooded area.

Wheaton’s family was notified, and his body was taken to the morgue at Wayne UNC Health Care.
