A downtown Goldsboro ice cream shop that won a national contest is getting a full makeover and will be giving free ice cream to the community Saturday to celebrate.

The Ice Storm, located at 116 S. Center St., won Blue Bunny ice cream’s Heart of Fun grand prize giveaway valued at $55,000. Store owners were notified of their win July 18.

“We keep referring to this as Christmas in July,” co-owner Yvonnia Moore said Wednesday. “We were just blown away but at the same time just so thankful for our business but also our community. This was that feel-good that I think that we all needed.”

As grand prize winner, the store will receive $15,000 for operations, $5,000 to purchase Blue Bunny ice cream products, $30,000 to remodel the store and $5,000 toward a grand reopening party.

To win the contest, Moore submitted an essay telling Blue Bunny in 500 words or less about the ice cream parlor, its financial struggles and how a grant can have a positive impact on the business and benefit the community.

The ice cream giveaway is happening Saturday from noon to 6 at the South Center Street business.

“Saturday is when it all comes together, and we want our community come and show the Blue Bunny team and all the people who’ve been a part of this the beauty of Wayne County,” Moore said.

“It’s free ice cream for everyone, and from looking at the forecast, it looks like it’s going to be a hot one, so it’s a perfect day for ice cream and to come and see the new space and come and take part in the new chapter of The Ice Storm. We’re gonna have a party. We’re going to have entertainment, music, fun and celebrating community.”

The Ice Storm, known for its hand-scooped ice cream, ice cream nachos, ice cream sandwiches, freshly squeezed orangeade and lemonade, cold-pressed juices, hot dogs, chili and treats, has been in business since 2012.

Moore co-owns the business along with Antonio Williams.

The store remains closed until Saturday as design teams and construction workers prepare for the grand reopening.

“This is a new chapter for The Ice Storm and our community,” Moore said. “We hope that this story inspires other businesses to just hold on and to keep faith because help may be just around the corner.”

The shop’s normal hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
