A man was found dead in a parking lot on North Berkeley Boulevard on Monday night.

Goldsboro police opened a death investigation after an unidentified man was found dead in an enclosed dumpster area in a parking lot adjacent to the strip mall where Staples, Big Lots and Books-A-Million are located, said LaToya Henry, public information officer for the city of Goldsboro.

Officers responded to the scene around 5:50 p.m. Monday, she said.

Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division and Crime Scene Unit were on scene and opened an investigation, Henry said. At the time the victim was found, police could not determine the time or cause of the death, she said.

The N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is conducting an autopsy of the unidentified victim, Henry said.

Officials with the Goldsboro Police Department will not answer questions regarding the investigation, Henry said. Police will not clarify if the victim was found in the dumpster, where the dumpster area is located or who found the victim. The investigation is ongoing, she said.

Anyone with information about the crime should call Crime Stoppers at 919-735-2255 or submit a tip at p3tips.com, Henry said. Callers are anonymous, and people providing information leading to felony arrests are awarded up to $1,000 in cash.
