A section of U.S. 117 was closed for more than two hours after a fatal head-on collision killed a Kenansville man and injured two people Saturday night.

N.C. Highway Patrol 1st Sgt. John Bobbitt said Dallas Ray Foss, 26, of Kenansville, and passenger Alexandria Barraza, 17, of Mount Olive, were traveling south in the northbound lane of U.S. 117 in a red 2004 Ford Freestar when they struck a 2000 Chevy Silverado head-on around 5:30 p.m. Bobbitt said Foss was pronounced dead on scene, and Barraza was transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville in critical condition.

Bobbitt said the driver of the 2000 Chevy Silverado, Michael McKinny, 22, of Wilson, was transported to Wayne UNC Health Care with minor injuries. A third vehicle sustained minor damages after it was struck with a piece of tire, Bobbitt said. The driver of the third vehicle was not injured, he said.

All U.S. 117 northbound traffic near Lafayette Street was diverted to U.S. 117 Alternate for more than two hours.

Bobbitt said he does not think alcohol or weather played a role in the wreck.
