Special Olympics of Wayne County recently held its local basketball skills games for student and agency athletes in preparation of the upcoming state contest.
Three days of polishing up their basketball skills in dribbling, shooting and passing were held at the W.A. Foster Center, said Donna May, recreation therapist with the city of Goldsboro.
She said 50 athletes participated from Edgewood Community Developmental School and middle school grades, with another 68 representing local agencies, and another 42 high school athletes.
Several other local events are coming up later this month and next, and volunteers are always needed to support the Special Olympics athletes, May said.
“The next games for Wayne County will be the aquatics at the Family Y on Feb. 28. Opening ceremony will start at 10 a.m., and we’ll have 21 athletes from schools and agencies,” she said. “The games for track and field are March 27 for schools and March 28 for agencies, held at Eastern Wayne High School track. Both days’ opening ceremony will start at 10 a.m.”
