The Farm Credit Farmers Market will celebrate Tomato Day on Friday — the latest in a series of events to showcase fruits and produce that are in season.
Shoppers can purchase tomatoes at the market, enter their best tomato dish in a recipe contest, sample a new recipe featuring tomatoes and get answers to their gardening questions.
The market, located behind the Maxwell Center, 3114 Wayne Memorial Drive, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The tomato recipe contest is open to all ages, and contestants must be present during the contest.
Entries will be received from 1 to 1:30 p.m. with the judging to begin at 1:30 p.m.
The recipe, which must include at least 1 cup of tomatoes, will need to be submitted with the entry.
Contestants may enter more than one recipe, but only one recipe can win. Entries must be homemade and prepared at home and brought to the market ready for judging.
The entry will need to be large enough to serve three to four judges. Entries may be served to the audience after judging and the announcement of a winner.
Entries may be brought in any type of container, preferably disposable, since it is not the responsibility of the farmers market to return any dishes.
The winner’s recipe and picture will be published in local media outlets.
From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Extension Agent Michelle Estrada will conduct a food demonstration using recipes that include tomatoes. Those attending will be able to sample the food and receive recipe and nutritional information.
Extension Master Gardeners will be available to answer gardening questions.
