Granville David “Tom” Lee, 85, died Monday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Born in Sampson County, he was the son of the late Archie F. Lee Sr. and Lela Harris Lee, and father of the late Randy Moore Lee.

He was also preceded in death by his brother, Archie F. Lee Jr.; sisters, Earlene Lee Leo and Joyce Hawley; and a nephew, James Gale Lee.

Tom was retired from the United States Air Force, and a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church in Dunn.

A service to celebrate Tom’s life will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Michael Worley officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Lena M. Lee; a daughter, Candy Martin; a sister, Juanita Winders; and nieces and nephews, Eddie Earl Lee, Donald Winders, Curt Hawley, Cathy Jackson, Marsha Wrench, Patricia Alderman and Sharon Pope.

Died Dec. 16, 2018

Delores Stenquist Smith, 72, Kinston, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She attended Charles B. Aycock High School before graduating from Brogden High School in 1964. She graduated from the nursing program at Wayne Technical Institute in 1965.

Throughout her life, Delores was a devoted Christian, spending much of her time in church activities.

She chose a life of servitude, nursing for more than 25 years and retiring from Caswell Center in 2006.

Her greatest love and passion in life was her family, including her many dogs she cared for over the years.

She was the daughter of the late Fred and Margaret Stenquist of Goldsboro.

Preceded in death by her high school sweetheart and husband of 48 years, Kenneth Ray Smith of Kinston.

She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly S. Meidinger of Elizabeth City and fiancé, Rod Ashby of Newport News and Katherine S. Brown and husband, Walter Brown, of Roanoke Rapids; son, Kenneth Ray Smith Jr. and wife, Erica Little Smith, of Stantonsburg; nine grandchildren, Stephen, Angelynn, Jessica and Christopher Meidinger, Joshua, Maggie and Mary Delores Brown, Cameron Major and Caroline Smith; and her recently rescued dog, Sophie.

She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Young of Lake Norman and Elaine Doscher of Farmville, and brother, Ron Stenquist and wife, Neubi Stenquist, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at 3 p.m. at Spilman Baptist Church in Kinston.

Ivan Louis Grulke, 96, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018, at Brookdale Country Day Road.

Ivan was born in North Platte, Neb., Feb. 7, 1922, to the late Carl Frank Grulke and Minnie Rose Thiede Grulke.

For 49 years, Ivan was married to the late Lula Taylor Grulke, and today we rejoice in the fact that he has now been reunited with his sweetheart.

Ivan was a master at auto body repair, and took great pride in his work.

He was a member of Rosewood First Baptist Church, but after moving into the city of Goldsboro, Ivan began attending Victory Free Will Baptist Church.

Ivan proudly served his country as a gunner’s mate in the United States Navy during World War II.

The family will receive friends Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service at 11 a.m. to celebrate Ivan’s life in the chapel, with the Rev. John Howard officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with military honors.

Ivan is survived by nephews, Mike Cogdell, Joe Taylor, Steve Cogdell, Richard Taylor and David Taylor, and a niece, Brenda Kinlaw.

He is also survived by a special great-niece and caregiver, Stephanie Johnson, as well as some dear k-9 friends, Lucy and Big Rig.

We would like to give a very special thank you to the staff at Brookdale Country Day Road for the love and care it provided for Ivan during the past year. Simple words cannot express our gratitude for the special care Mrs. Carol always gave to him.

Also, a thank you to the caregivers who cared for Ivan over this past year, Rachel, Renee, Tavoris, Clavon, Chelonda, Della and Marika, as well as his special neighbors and friends, Pam and Paul Benton, and church friend, Richard Gates.

Stephen Ray Best, 74, Wilson, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018.

Funeral, Friday, 2 p.m., Grace Baptist Church, followed by a time of visiting and sharing.

He had served in the Army National Guard, Wilson Jaycees and the Exchange Club.

Deer hunting and watching was important to him as a member of the Red F Hunt Club of Eastern Carolina.

A precious word to him was when the grandchildren called him Poppy.

Joseph “Joey” Nelson Pate Jr., 52, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, in Greenville, N.C.

He was born May 12, 1966, to Judy Crumpler Pate and Joseph Nelson Pate Sr. in Goldsboro, N.C.

He was employed by Weyerhaeuser in Grifton, N.C.

He is also survived by his loving wife, Donna Sease Pate; three children, Joshua Pate (Stephanie), Brittany Ellisor (Tyler Moss) and Ashley Ellisor (Shannon Connolly); two grandchildren, Chase Pate and Hadley Moss; his beloved dog and friend, Lucy.

He is also survived by a sister, Amanda Barnes (Ronnie); a brother, Chad Pate (Tracey) of Pikeville, N.C.; sisters, Leslie Lawhorn (Edward) and Jennifer Pate of Pikeville, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law, Alliene Sease of Newberry, S.C.
