Richard Lex Yearwood

Richard Lex Yearwood, 71, Goldsboro, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2018, at Wayne UNC Health Care surrounded by his family.
Richard was born in Gastonia, N.C., on Aug. 21, 1947, to the late Lex and Evelyn Yearwood. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and retired after 22 years of service as a master sergeant and retired civil service for 22 years. Richard enjoyed cooking and was well known for his pound cakes, and also enjoyed shooting pool and DJing.
A service to celebrate Richard’s life will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2018, at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home. The family will greet friends Monday immediately following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home. Interment will be in the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro with military honors.
Richard is survived by his wife Jan Giddens Yearwood; stepchildren, Susie Phillips, Steve Harmon and Sharon Brown; and sisters, Peggy Rowland and Margaret Cornwell.

W. Brent Hood

William Brent Hood, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away early Saturday morning, Dec. 29, at his home. He was 54 years of age.
Brent, a native of the Grantham community, graduated in 1982 from Southern Wayne Senior High School, and received an associate degree in photography from Randolph Technical College. His love for photography led him to operate a private photography studio at his home, and later, he was employed with Mount Olive Tribune and Goldsboro News-Argus as staff photographer. He, then, became employed at Wayne Community College, first as web designer, and later as director of the office of communications.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Brock Hood; a son, Parker Hood of the home; his parents, Ted and Doris W. Hood of the Grantham community; and several nieces and nephews from both his and Elizabeth’s families.
Brent now joins his son, Matthew, and his only brother, Kent, in eternal peace.
A service to remember Brent and his life will be held Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive. The Rev. Frank Sandy will officiate, and following the service, the family will be receiving friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the charity of one’s choosing.

Peggy G. Pendergraft

Peggy Gurganus Pendergraft, 79, of Dudley, passed away Sunday morning at Wayne U.N.C. Health Care. She was the daughter of the late Lester and Mamie Gurganus, and was the widow of the late George Terry Pendergraft. Mrs. Pendergraft had worked for O’Berry Center in the dietary department, as well as a machine operator for Barry Manufacturing, and as a dental assistant.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jim Willoughby officiating. Entombment will follow at the Wayne Memorial Park mausoleum. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
Mrs. Pendergraft is survived by her son, Mark Pendergraft and fiancée, Jane Key of Goldsboro; a granddaughter, Krystal Pendergraft; a great-grandson, Ace Bennett, who was the light of her life; a friend, Ruth Outlaw; her caregiver, Carlene Fennell; and her pet dog, Toby.
