Carrie Ashby Best, 56, Mount Olive, passed away Tuesday surrounded by her family at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

She was the daughter of Gordon Ashby and the late Judy Ashby, and she was the wife of William Allen Best. Jr.

Mrs. Best was an associate of Walmart.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at 2 p.m. at Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, with Richard Cuddington officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.

In addition to her husband, “Bill,” she is survived by three sons, William Best III and wife, Chelsey Lee Best, of Faison, Andrew Best and wife, Haley Kohnen Best, of Goldsboro, and Chris Best of Mount Olive; grandchildren, Ethan Wiggins, Liam, Paislee and Autumn Best; a brother, Steve Ashby of Four Oaks; a sister, Diane Ashby of Cary; and her three pet babies, Sandy, Bella and Chico.

Mrs. Edna Myrle Hill Sauls, 95, a resident of Washington, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, at River Trace Nursing Center.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018, at Alligood Church of God, 1891 Mill Hole Road, Washington, N.C., 27889, and will be conducted by pastor Gary Bateman and pastor Harold Anderson. Burial will follow in Snow Hill Cemetery.

Paul Alligood, Ryan Alligood, Todd Sauls, Ronnie Sauls, Kris Sauls and Joey Shore will serve as pallbearers.

Mrs. Sauls was born March 20, 1923, in Wayne County to the late Roland and Julia Killette Hill.

She married Gurney Lee Sauls, who preceded her in death Nov. 16, 1976.

She attended New Hope High School in Goldsboro, was a homemaker and a pastor’s wife of 30 years, assisting him in his ministry in the Church of God. Mrs. Sauls was a member of Patetown Church of God in Goldsboro.

Survivors include her three children, Gary Sauls of LaGrange, Judy Sauls Alligood of Washington and Timothy Lee Sauls and wife, Debbie, of Manteo; five grandchildren, Ronnie Sauls, Todd Sauls, Kris Sauls, Paul Alligood and Ryan Alligood; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Jason Alligood; one sister, Mary Hill “Black” Turnage; one son-in-law, Don Alligood; and one daughter-in-law, Bobbie Sauls.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home of her daughter, Judy S. Alligood, 127 Castle Court, Washington, N.C., 27889.

Zelda “Teeny” Best Cox, 90, resident of the Mount Olive area, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, at Wayne UNC Health Care, Goldsboro.

Teeny was born April 5, 1928, to Larry and Bertie Best.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Leigh Cox; an infant son; a son, Charles Leigh Cox Jr.; and brother, Larry Best Jr.

She is survived by two children, a son, Stewart Gray Cox and wife, Alice, of Goldsboro and a daughter, Cindy Jarman and husband, D.J. Jarman, of Mount Olive.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Katharine Jarman, Jesse Cox and wife, Jennifer, Laura Jarman and Leigh Ann Sherwood and husband, Justin, and a great-grandson, Sam Cox.

Teeny served as payroll clerk for the town of Mount Olive for 24 years.

She served for 25 years as treasurer of Baker Presbyterian Church. More recently, she was a member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church.

Teeny was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was happiest caring for her grandchildren or working in her yard.

Her life will be remembered in a graveside service to be held Sunday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Mount Olive. Presiding will be the Rev. Troy Lesher-Thomas.

Edgar Lee “Buddy” Walker, 80, passed away Wednesday morning, Dec. 19, 2018, at New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington.

A former longtime resident of the Mount Olive area, he had been employed with John Patterson Furniture Store as a salesman until establishing his own floor covering business.

After retirement, he relocated to the Hampstead area.

Buddy is survived by his wife, Linda Alphin Walker; a daughter, Donna Lynn W. Cashwell and husband, Gill, of Mount Olive; a granddaughter, Heather Padgett and husband, Richard; and three great-grandchildren, Riley, Raegen and Kinley Padgett.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. at Wayne Memorial Park Cemetery, Goldsboro. The Rev. John Strickland will be ministering.

Samuel Lawrence Lane, 68, Mount Olive, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at Wayne UNC Health Care surrounded by his family.

Sam was born in Wayne County March 24, 1950, to the late Carl Lassiter Lane and Ida Boswell Lane of the Nahunta community.

For many years, Sam worked as a soil technician with Best Sand and Gravel.

Sam proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

He was always the happiest when he was riding his motorcycle or jeep.

Sam also enjoyed making barn quilts with his wife at their home.

Sam’s faith in God was recognized by his family when he would attend Yelverton United Methodist Church in Faro. The family thought that the only reason he would go to church was so he could eat Sunday lunch with his family after the service, but after some time, he developed a great love for God and his messenger, Greg Moser.

A service celebrating Sam’s life will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Greg Moser and the Rev. Mary Kay Best officiating.

The family will greet friends Saturday immediately following the service and other times at the home of his sister, Melody Thomas.

Sam is survived by his wife of 32 years, Judy Watkins Lane; his daughter, Samantha Jones and husband, Al; sisters, Melody Thomas and Lisa Teachey; and several nieces and nephews he loved very much.

He is also survived by his best friend and buddy, Ben Claiborne.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Chris Lane, Craig Lane and Jerry Lane, and sister, Carla Sauls.

It is a known fact to the family here that when his brothers and sister saw Sam coming home to heaven, they knew Mama would be happiest that her favorite boy had come home.

Irma J. Franks died at Rex Hospital Dec. 19, 2018, after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of the late J.A. Jones and Bessie S. Jones.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Drewry J. Jones and Edward S. Jones, and sisters, Kiva Jones, Ethel Jones, Alma Watson, Francis Shearon and Annie Laura Prince.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, M. Carlisle Franks; her son, Marc K. Franks, wife, Robbie; and her granddaughter, Kathryn F. White, husband, Michael White.

She was a graduate of Rex School of Nursing, and did further studies at Duke University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

For many years she was director of patient services, St. Joseph Home Health, Southern Pines, N.C.

A family entombment will be held Saturday, Dec. 22, at Montlawn Memorial Park prior to an 11 a.m. memorial service at Ridge Road Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Eva Ellen Holmes Dearman, Mount Olive area resident, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, at Wayne UNC Health Care.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bessie Holmes, and a sister, Lois McCullen.

Survivors include her husband, Houston E. “Tommy” Dearman Jr.; a daughter, Donna D. Gautier of Mount Olive; two sons, Robert Eugene Dearman and wife, Wendy, and Christopher Dearman and wife, Candice, all of Mount Olive; two sisters, Sharon Roberts of Seven Springs and Shirley Jones of Mount Olive; two brothers, Robert Earl “Bob” Holmes of Goldsboro and Kenneth Holmes of Rhode Island; and three grandchildren, Faith, Kayla and Kelly Dearman.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m. in Tyndall Funeral chapel. The Rev. Steve Sprinkle will officiate.

Visitation will take place immediately after the service.

Burial will be Sunday, Dec. 23, at 4 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Mount Olive.
