Betty Grimes

Betty Lois Jordan Grimes, 83, Goldsboro, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

She was born Aug. 25, 1935, in Wilson County.

Graveside services will be held Dec. 21, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro, with the Rev. Alice W. Davis officiating.

Mrs. Grimes was a longtime resident of Goldsboro, N.C.

She worked many years as a nurse with Wayne Memorial Hospital doing private duty nursing and with Eastern Carolina Surgical Associates.

She was an active member of Jefferson United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Glossie Mae (Holland) and Marvin Jordan; her husband, Jimmy Grimes; and siblings, Retha Jordan Johnson, Georgia Jordan, Clara Jordan Lynch, Wilton Jordan, Grace Jordan and Richard (Bunny) Jordan.

She is survived by her four children, Laurie Grimes, Judith Grimes (Bobby) Flanagan, Nancy Grimes (James) Navecky and James Lloyd (Maylin) Grimes, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three siblings, Margaret Jordan Grimes, Tiffany Jordan Pearce and Brooks Jordan, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the following agencies: Goldsboro Assisted Living, Community Home Care and Hospice, Kitty Askins Hospice Center and Casey Funeral Home and Cremations in Princeton, N.C.

Jessie Mack Simmons, 98, 202 Oak Grove Road, died Tuesday at Brook Stone Living Center, Pollocksville.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. today at North West A Free Will Baptist Conference Tabernacle. Burial will be in Free Will Chapel Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be an hour prior to the service at the church.

Nelson Nash Riggs Sr., 79, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center with his family by his side.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec.16, 2018, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.

Mr. Riggs was born in Jones County, N.C., Aug. 26, 1939, to the late Edward Nash Riggs and Vivian Hardy Riggs.

He was a member of The Shepherd’s Chapel, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Mr. Riggs is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Riggs; two sons, Nelson Riggs Jr. and wife, Tracy, of Fremont, and Scott Riggs and wife, Mamie, of Goldsboro; daughter, Lana Smithwick and husband, Bruce, of Pikeville; two sisters, Judy Marlene Crisp and husband, Howard, of Washington, N.C., and Evelyn Folsom of Georgia; eight grandchildren, Michael Riggs and wife, Jessica, Caroline Riggs, Natalie Riggs, Jordan Riggs, Scotty Riggs, Debra Riggs, Spencer Riggs and Stuart Harris and wife, Sarah; and six great-grandchildren, Braxton, Sawyer, Blythe, Aubrey, Miller and Miles.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

The family is in the care of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro.

Leslie Nelson

Retired United States Air Force Maj. Leslie Charles Nelson, 86, Goldsboro, met his Lord Thursday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Les was born in Fergus Falls, Minn., Dec. 16, 1931, to the late Arthur Emmanuel Nelson and Viola Kinn Nelson.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War, and retired as a major in 1974.

Following his military career, Les worked in operations at East Coast Federal Savings Bank.

Les lived a life of dedication to his family and friends and to his community.

He served his community many ways as a volunteer with Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and as a member of the Goldsboro Downtown Lions Club for 43 years, the Air Force Association and Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity.

Les was a member of Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church.

A service to celebrate Les’ life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at Stoney Creek Free Will Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary Bailey officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery with full military honors.

Les is survived by his wife, Willie Nelson; daughters, Edith N. Crowell of Brevard and Amy K. Nelsen of Brevard; son, Andrew S. Nelson and wife, Michelle, of Brevard; stepdaughters, Gina Cochrane of Fremont and Melanie K. Woods and husband, Terry, of Newport News, Va.; stepson, Glenn E. McGinnis and wife, Amy, of Elizabeth City; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his half-sister, Nancy Denny of New Braunfels, Texas, and half-brother, David A. Nelson of Dallas, Texas.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Leslie C. Nelson II.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his residence.
