The funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, at Goshen Disciple Church of Christ, Faison, N.C., with pastor Donald Dewitt officiating. Burial will be in the Hargrove Family Cemetery, Mount Olive, N.C.

Mr. Gray is survived by his parents, Joel and Angelia Gray of Mount Olive, N.C.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, one hour prior to service, 11 a.m. to noon, at the church.

John Harper Jr., 81, Dumfries, Va., died Feb. 10, 2019.

He was the beloved husband of Beulah (nee Jones); devoted father of John III (Rita Schaer), Mark (Jacqueline) and David (Kristen); loving grandfather of seven; dearest brother of Geraldine Sherard and Joyce Stanford (Peter) (brother Melvin preceded him in death).

Also survived by a host of nephews, nieces, family members, brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and friends.

The funeral wake will be held Feb. 14, 2019, from 7 to 9 p.m., at First Mount Zion Baptist Church (FMZBC), 16622 Dumfries Road, Dumfries, Va., 22025.

The funeral service will be held Feb. 15, 2019, starting at 11 a.m. at FMZBC following the final public viewing at 10 a.m.

Malcolm Wheelis Lassiter, 71, Mount Olive, passed away at Genesis Healthcare Tuesday surrounded by his family.

He was the son of the late Nathaniel Roosevelt and Sarah Evelyn Gupton Lassiter, and was the husband of the late Sybil Lassiter.

Mr. Lassiter was a retired courier with Southern Pharmacy, and a member of Thunder Swamp Pentecostal Holiness Church.

The family will receive friends Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Jonathan Altman officiating. Committal services will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.

Mr. Lassiter is survived by his wife, Joanie Price Lassiter; his son, Jimmy Lassiter and wife, Heather, of Mount Olive; a stepson, Phil Price and wife, Jennifer; two sisters, Nancy Williams of Henderson and Sarah Cogbill of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren, Rayna Lassiter, Gabe Jernigan, Noah Price and Melinda Buckner.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Lassiter.

Thelma Batson Barfield, 87, Calypso resident, passed away Tuesday night, Feb. 12, 2019, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

She had been employed with Boling Chair Co., was a member of Calypso Baptist Church, enjoyed working in her yard, loved to dance and was always eager to go out to eat with her family and friends.

Mrs. Barfield was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood Glenn Barfield; a son, Timmy Barfield; her parents, Willie Sanford Batson and Annie Belle Turner Batson; and a sister, Abby Lambert Jackson.

She is survived by a daughter, Belinda Gregory and husband, Don, of Calypso; a son, Glenn Barfield and wife, Barbara, of Mount Olive; five grandchildren, Nicholas Barfield and Katie Sass, Tiffany and Jonathan Griffin, Donald and Leslie Gregory, Crystal and Jody Quinn and Amber Issa; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Janie Stevens of Mount Olive.

A service of worship to celebrate her Christian life will be Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. at Tyndall Funeral Home, with pastor Justin Smith officiating, followed by a time of visitation. Burial will be in Calypso Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

She was born in Wayne County Jan. 20, 1952, to the late Clifton McLaurin and Etta Joyner Becton.

Saturday, the family will assemble at the home of Mother Etta Joyner Becton, 301 S. Wooten St., LaGrange, at 11:45 a.m. for the funeral procession.

Richard Leo Barfield Jr., 56, 116 Scarlet Green Court, Garner, died Monday in Newnan, Ga.

Funeral will be noon Friday at Springfield Baptist Church, Raleigh, with the Rev. Anthony Ezzell officiating. Entombment will be Saturday at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Richard Leo Sr. and Elizabeth Easterling Barfield. He was married to the Rev. Dr. Cynthia Blackman Barfield.

Three daughters survive.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 tonight at Garris Funeral Home chapel and 11:30 to 11:55 a.m. Friday at the church.
