Dorothy Ann (Wall) Beard

Dorothy Ann (Wall) Beard

Dorothy Ann (Wall) Beard

Nov. 9, 1932-Jan. 20, 2019

Dorothy Beard, loved by her family and friends, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 20, in Lexington, Ky. She was 86 years old.

Dorothy was born on a family farm in Pikeville, N.C., in 1932, and after graduating from Goldsboro High School (N.C.), worked in the office of J.P. Taylor Tobacco Co., where she met and married Charles LeCompte Beard, Lexington, Ky.

Charlie and Dorothy were married, and raised their family in Lexington. Charlie and Dorothy divorced in 1974.

For 43 years, until her retirement at 74, Dorothy was an important part of the civil court system in Fayette County. She served willingly and with passion and grace.

Attorneys in Lexington and the county all knew Dorothy — “ask Dorothy, she will know the answer” was a frequent suggestion when an answer was needed on court filings and procedures. If you were nice, you got her undivided attention; if you were not, well, she didn’t like bad manners.

She was a historian of the family, and not just her own, her friends, neighbors and just about anyone she met.

She enjoyed places and people and travel.

But mostly, she just cared about people and the world around her. She cared about Lexington, she knew many mayors and councilmen, too many to name.

She loved the thoroughbred history of the Bluegrass and everything the Wildcats played — baseball, football and of course, basketball.

She was a frequent participant in Komen for the Cure in Lexington and other breast cancer organizations as she was a survivor and thriver.

She loved the Lexington arts community, and was an active theatergoer.

Most of all, Dorothy was a community herself, drawing friends and acquaintances together — watching a Cats game, checking out the courthouse renovations or if you were lucky, having a New Year’s Eve dinner of pasta and white clam sauce with wine and champagne.

It was the place to be, and now, she is where she needs to be.

She is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Her son, Charles L. Beard Jr., 63 of Decatur, Texas, and his wife, Melissa, 64, have two children, Charles Beard III, 29, of San Antonio, Texas, and Molly Beard, 27, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Her daughter, Martha Beard, 60, of Rye, N.Y., and her husband, Rick Salk, 58, have two children, Emily Salk, 24, New York, N.Y., and Katie Salk, 22, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

A memorial reception was hosted at Milward Funeral Home, North Broadway, Lexington, Ky., Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m.,

Larry Hinson

Larry Hinson

April 25, 1950-Jan. 23, 2019

Milton Larry Hinson, 68, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Larry was born in Wayne County April 25, 1950, to the late James Floyd Hinson and Cassie Woodard Hinson.

He proudly served his community with Wayne County EMS for 39 years, beginning as a volunteer with Grantham Rescue Squad, and later serving as an EMT and paramedic.

Larry was a member of Black Jack Grove Original Free Will Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon.

His warmth and generosity were well known and cherished by those he encountered throughout his life.

Even in his declining health, he found joy in simple pleasures: Visits from family and friends, a North Carolina State win or almost equal, a loss by the Tar Heels.

Above all, Larry enjoyed his trips to the mountains, watching a baseball game or spending time with his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Larry’s life at 7 p.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock, the Rev. Pete Radford and the Rev. Franklin Lane officiating.

The family will also greet friends following the service at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.

Interment will be Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at 10 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Larry is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Lynda Thornton Hinson; sons, Allen Hinson and wife, Dana, Michael Hinson and wife, Paige, and Nicholas Hinson and wife, Lisa; and grandchildren, Reed Stafford, Gavin Hinson, Asher Hinson, Mackenzie Hinson; Briannah Hinson, Gracie Hinson and Kaeden Hinson.

He is also survived by his brother, Carlton Hinson and wife, Renee.

The family would like to express its appreciation for the compassionate care provided by the doctors and nurses at SMOC, as well as the staff at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Simple words cannot express our gratitude.

Love and heartfelt thanks are also expressed to his EMS friends, who helped in so many thoughtful ways.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church, 341 Black Jack Church Road, Goldsboro, N.C., 27530, or Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 107 Handley Park Court, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Charlotte S. Jones

July 3, 1931-Jan. 22, 2019

Charlotte Sutton Jones, 87, Kinston, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019.

Charlotte was born July 3, 1931, in Lenoir County to the late Alex Milton Sutton and Delilah Blanche Creech Sutton. Charlotte was also preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Barwick Jones Jr.

Charlotte’s hands were an extension of her heart. Her love for others flowed through her fingers as she sewed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s clothes and created beautiful crafts and projects to help her community.

She loved having her hands in the soil, and found joy tending to her flower and vegetable gardens.

During her 25 years of service to Kinston’s Caswell Center, Charlotte helped create the position of adaptive clothing designer, where she developed specialized clothing when commercially available products weren’t suitable. Each of her designs was as unique as her clients, and to each project, she applied her skill, creativity and keen eye for fashion.

Charlotte used her talents to minister to those around her.

A gifted pianist, she blessed the congregations of Union Baptist in Moss Hill and First Baptist in Kinston, playing before and during services.

Her friends and family looked forward to her birthday cards.

She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, 4-H and American Red Cross blood drives.

Charlotte’s warm smile, the sparkle in her eyes and her sweet spirit will be forever remembered and cherished by all who knew her.

Charlotte is survived by three children, Virginia Ann Sutton and husband, David, Floyd Barwick Jones III and wife, Pat, and Carl Jones and friend, Kathy.

She has five grandchildren, Robin Anders and husband, Will, Lauran Tyndall and husband, Perry, Adam Jones, Janna Byrd and husband, Justin, and Erin Williams and husband, Tyler.

She has six great-grandchildren, Ollie, Charlie, Liddy, Emma, Truett and Jentry.
