Mrs. Geraldine “Jerry” Price Bryan, 85, Fayetteville, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side Jan. 20, 2019.

She was a teacher, and enjoyed teaching kindergarten.

She was a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church for 57 years, and was very devoted to her church and church family.

She was loved by everyone, and will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish her memories are her devoted husband of 62 years, Robert “Bob” Bryan Jr. of the home; three daughters, Catharine Brown (Rad) of Fayetteville, Lynn Hobgood (Sam) of Hillsborough and Mary Bearse (Pete) of Los Angeles; eight grandchildren, Bucky Brown (Jordan), Bobby Brown (Rachel), Nick Brown, Sammy Hobgood, Emmet Hobgood, Marjorie Bearse, Anna Bearse and Peter Bearse; and one great-granddaughter, Lawson Brown.

The family received friends from 12 p.m. (noon) to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2019, in Gathering Hall at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church, Fayetteville, N.C., with a service following at 1:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial took place at 4 p.m. in Willowdale Cemetery, Goldsboro, N.C.

Retired United States Air Force Master Sgt. Thomas “Tom” Richard Frey, 83, Goldsboro, retired U.S. Postal Service worker, died Monday at his residence.

A service celebrating the life of Tom will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Selah Christian Church, 1332 Selah Church Road, Four Oaks, with military honor. The Rev. Patrick Muston will officiate.

There will be a time of sharing with the family following the service in the fellowship hall.

Surviving are his wife, Lou “Jean” Frey; son, J. Greg Kirkman of Greenville; daughters, Dollie Frey Johnson of Rosewood and Vicki J. Kirkman Whaley (John) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Ollen Johnson III, Leigh Ann Johnson Hanson (Wes), Megan Whaley Creech and J. Fletcher Whaley; and great-grandchildren, Oriana Johnson, Emma Creech, Jameson Creech, William Hanson and Lonnie Hanson.

He was a native of Panama, Ill., and was preceded in death by his parents, Josephine Tilk Frey and Adam William Frey; sons, Daniel Lee Frey and Gregory Thomas Frey; and siblings, JoAnn Frey Webster, William G. Frey and Harry R. Frey.

Mr. Frey served his country during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War; he was stationed in Japan and France during his term.

He was an active member of Selah Christian Church until his death.

Andree Yvonne Flowers passed away the morning of Jan. 21, 2019, after a very robust 86 years of life.

She was born Andree Martineau in Paris June 4, 1932.

With her sister, Roland, Andree survived the holocaust and the German occupation of France.

In 1955, she married a young United States Air Force sergeant, Glyn Robert Flowers, and they lived happily ever after.

Andree and Glyn left behind a tapestry of love and kindness. They will live forever in our hearts and minds. Farewell friend, sister, mama, grandma, great-grandma and auntie.

Carroll Rex Steele, 86, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville surrounded by his family.

Carroll was born in Charleston, W.Va., Aug. 26, 1932, the youngest of seven children born to the late James Floyd Steele and Hazel Richardson Steele.

A Korean War and Vietnam War veteran, he proudly served our country in the United States Air Force for 20 years, and retired in 1971 as master sergeant.

After retirement from the military, Carroll worked with Wayne County ABC Board from 1972 to 1997.

He had an enduring loyalty, dedication to and deep love for his wife and family. He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, from 11 a.m. to noon at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Carroll’s life at noon in the chapel. The Rev. Allen Stocks will officiate. Entombment will follow in Wayne Memorial Park with military honors.

Carroll is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Patricia Means Steele; children, James A. Steele (Judy), Michael C. Steele (Ruth), David A. Steele (Debbie) and Cynthia D. Steele; sister, Betty Shepherd; grandchildren, Jeffrey S. Steele (Amy), Julie S. Duty (Jason), Samantha J. Gilliland (Billy) and Nathan A. Steele; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Carroll was preceded in death by his siblings, Opal Mallett, Ralph Steele, Kenneth Steele, Glendol Mathers and Carlet Steele.

John H. Hess, 78, Fremont, went home to be with the Lord Jan. 20, 2019.

Funeral, Saturday, Jan. 26, 11 a.m., Aycock’s Primitive Baptist Church, Fremont, followed by a time of visiting and sharing.

John was a devoted husband and beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Following his early retirement from Alcoa in Lancaster, Pa., he and his wife, the late Sylvia Williamson Hess, who died in November 2017, moved to North Carolina, where he took up his love of woodworking and began a remodeling business.

He was later called to the ministry of eldership, and served as a faithful minister of God at both Aycock’s and Muddy Creek Primitive Baptist churches. He continued to hold the status of elder emeritus at Aycock’s until his passing.

He is survived by his daughters, Gwendolyn Strausser (Carl) of Stevens, Pa., and Michelle Long (Dean) of Lititz, Pa.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Peggy Kauffman (Jae) Manheim, Pa.; and brother, Charles Hess of Myrtle Beach, S.C.

He was the son of the late Brady A. and Florence Ardnt Hess, and was also preceded in death by two brothers, Brady Hess and Eli Hess.

Mary Wilson Herring, 70, 1801 Asheville St., died Jan. 14 at Carolina East Medical Center.

He was born in Wilson County Feb. 28, 1936, to the late Kermit and Maybelle Narron Raper. He was married to Judy Batten Raper.

He was born in Johnston County Feb. 10, 1948, to the late Clyde and Ila Pearce Turner. He was married to Joyce Gooding Turner.

He is survived by three daughters and two sons.
