Edwin Borden Lee Jr. died June 14, 2019, in Durham, N.C.

He was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Goldsboro, N.C., son of the late Edwin Borden and Loula Powell Lee.

He was predeceased by a younger brother, Henry Livingston Lee.

A graduate of Goldsboro High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Duke University in 1945.

Mr. Lee served in the United States Navy for five years, having joined the NROTC program at Duke in 1943. He was commissioned as an ensign upon graduation from Duke, and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, serving two years in East Asia.

He retired as a lieutenant in 1955. Mr. Lee was assigned to the Navy Japanese Language School, first in Colorado and later in Oklahoma, during World War II, and in 1946 and 1947, was a civilian employee of the United States Army of Occupation in Japan.

His study of the Japanese language and his interest in Japanese history led him to Columbia University in New York, where he received his master’s degree in 1954 and his Ph.D. in 1960.

From 1958 until retirement in 1987, Mr. Lee was on the faculty of Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y. , serving as chairman of the department of history for the last five years of his tenure.

After retirement, he remained in Clinton until 1992, when he returned to North Carolina to live at Forest at Duke retirement community in Durham.

Mr. Lee is survived by his sister, Anne Lee Kinsey Pate and husband, Mike Pate, along with his niece, Kathy Kinsey Gourley, and his two nephews, John Exum Kinsey Jr. and Robert Brownrigg Kinsey.

He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, John Exum Kinsey Sr., and his nieces, Georgia Lee Kinsey and Anne Bynum Lee.

Graveside services will take place in Willowdale Cemetery in Goldsboro at 3 o’clock Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

Jeffrey Keith Vick Sr., 59, Goldsboro, passed away Monday, June 17, 2019, at his home surrounded by his family.

Jeff was born in Wayne County Jan. 8, 1960, to Garland Vick of Goldsboro and the late Dora Ellen Holland Vick.

He was employed as an engineer with Cooper Standard in Goldsboro.

Jeff had a wonderful sense of humor, and never took himself too seriously.

He was a good friend and a great husband and father, and had a generous heart.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 19, 2019, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home and other times at his home.

A service to celebrate Jeff’s life will be held Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Marty Gurganus officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Jeff is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carla Person Vick; son, Jeffrey Keith Vick Jr.; daughter, April Dawn Vick; granddaughters, Peyton Olivia Vick and Gracie Claire Vick; brother, Richard Vick; and sister, Phyllis Walters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Jeff’s memory to Community Home Care and Hospice, 2309 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Vernell Perry Lipscomb, 65, Goldsboro, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, June 16, 2019, with family by her side.

Vernell was born in Lenoir County March 25, 1954, to the late Vance Perry and Mary Rivenbark. She was married to the late Steve “Nicky” Lipscomb.

A service to celebrate Vernell’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2019, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home, with the Rev. Crystal McCullen officiating.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

Interment will be Friday, June 21, 2019, at 10 a.m. in Wayne Memorial Park.

Vernell is survived by her sons, Dwayne Lipscomb and wife, Heather, and their daughter, Olivia, and Jeremy Lipscomb and wife, Amanda; brothers, Robert Perry and Joe Rivenbark; and sisters, Elizabeth King, Cindy Creech and Susan Gala.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Joyce McHale and Wanda Heath.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her memory to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The celebration of his life will be held Friday, June 21, 2019, at noon at J.B. Rhodes Funeral Home and Cremations, 1701 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C. He will be laid to rest at Wayne Memorial Park, 2925 U.S. 117 South, Dudley, N.C.

He was born April 14, 1936, in East Arcadia, N.C., to Howard Edward Graham and Wilhelmina Nobles Graham.
