Mr. Marvin Henry Jernigan, 88-year-old resident of the Mount Olive area, passed early Friday morning, March 29, at his home.

Mr. Jernigan was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy Holloman Jernigan; a granddaughter, Kristie Jernigan Lee; his parents, David Henry Jernigan and Lucy Ella Whitfield Jernigan; a brother, Jimmy Jernigan; and two sisters, Margaret J. Wall and Helen J. Garner.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Aileen King Jernigan of Mount Olive; a daughter and son-in-law, Meg and Danny Jackson of Mount Olive; three grandchildren, Allen Jernigan and wife, Brianna, Kimberly Jernigan Smith and husband, Scott, and Courtney Jackson Lambert and husband, Jim, all of Mount Olive; nine great-grandchildren, Hannah Lee, Gavin Lee, Cody Smith, Ailee Smith, Annalee Smith, Sarah Jernigan, Noah Jernigan, Ella James Lambert and Olivia Lambert; two sisters, Shirley J. Deal and Doris J. Ellis both of Mount Olive; and several nieces and nephews.

The family also wishes to acknowledge a dear friend to Mr. Jernigan, Nancy K. Brock of Mount Olive, and his faithful and loving caregivers, Juanita Stroud, Christy Crawford and Flora Chambers.

The family is also grateful to Dr. Kevin Talton and Family Medicine staff for their dedicated and professional approach in assisting Mr. Jernigan maintain a good quality of life for as long as possible.

Mr. Marvin Jernigan is being remembered as a good man who loved the land. While he was a lifelong farmer, he also was employed with Dewey Brothers in Goldsboro for 39 ½ years, where he was foreman of several departments.

He was a lifelong member of Northeast Original Free Will Baptist Church, and had served in the United States Army with the chemical corps as a rifle specialist.

His life will be remembered in a service Monday, April 1, at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Tyndall Funeral Home. Officiating will be the Rev. Richard Cuddington and the Rev. Jeff Dail.

Visitation will follow the service at the funeral home and at other times, his residence is open in which friends and family may call.

His burial will take place in Jernigan Family Cemetery in a private setting.

Our beloved Kenneth Deane Meador Sr., age 69, Dudley, N.C., went home to be with his Lord Friday, March 29, 2019, surrounded by family at his home following a long illness.

Born Aug. 7, 1949, in Crab Orchard, W.Va., he was the son of the late Deane and Margaret Maxine Meador.

Kenny was a certified electrician, working at Georgia-Pacific in Dudley for 10 years, and was also owner of Meador Electric.

He was member of Faith Free Will Baptist Church.

He enjoyed spending time with his family at his river camp in West Virginia.

Humble and kind, he had a wonderful sense of humor and genuine smile that will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of his life will be held Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Christian Powell, the Rev. Dann Patrick and the Rev. Walter Sloan officiating. A committal service will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the funeral service Tuesday evening.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife and best friend of 50 years, Connie Sue Lilly Meador; his children, Deane Meador (Kristen) of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Kristy Mason (Chris) and Mike Meador (Christy) both of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Brooke Meador, Sage Meador, Kinsey Meador, Dawson Meador, Laine Sellers, Logan Mason, Emma Meador and Kaden Meador; a great-grandchild, Aiden; brothers, Richard Meador of Tallahassee, Fla., and David Meador of Tallahassee, Fla.; and a sister, Ama Cadle of High Point, N.C.

Elmond Eugene “Gene” Smith, 80, Goldsboro, peacefully passed away Thursday, March 28, 2019, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family.

Born in Wayne County Jan. 3, 1939, he was the son of the late Elmond Smith and Sallie Stafford Smith.

Gene was a retired insurance adjuster and a veteran of the United States Air Force.

He was a member of Rosewood First Baptist Church.

Gene was an avid University of North Carolina fan, and found joy in the simple pleasures of a Tar Heel win or almost equal, a loss by the Blue Devils.

The family will receive friends Sunday, March 31, 2019, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home, followed by a service to celebrate Gene’s life at 3 p.m. in the chapel, with Dr. Mike Collier and the Rev. Vernon Braswell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery.

Gene is survived by two daughters, Angela Barlow and husband, Scott, of Midlothian, Va., and Tammy Marie De Groft of Glen Allen, Va.; son, Jeff Smith and wife, Eileen, of Willow Spring; brother, Luby Smith and wife, Becky, of Goldsboro; sister-in-law, Linda Smith; seven grandchildren, Jessica Emery and husband, Chase, Darren Barlow, Abigail Grace De Groft, Zane Jason De Groft, Jennifer Convey, Zachary Edward Eugene Smith and Matthew Ryan Smith; and two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Noah Convey.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Luther Smith.

Joe Wesley Baker, 74, Princeton, died at home Thursday.

He was born April 24, 1944, in Greene County to the late Floyd Parker and Edna Davis Baker. He was married to Jeanette Lamm Baker.
