Master Sgt. Samuel Douglas Mangum, 82, retired USAF, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on Friday, March 8, 2019, at his home while surrounded by his family.

Doug was born in Granville County on March 23, 1936, to the late Jessie Hubert and Mary Andrews Mangum. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force and retired in 1975 with 21 years of honorable service as a master sergeant. Doug’s valor and skills were recognized with numerous decorations. Following his military career, Doug was employed with Jeffrey’s Seed Company in 1981-2000 with 19 years of dedicated service. Doug was a member of Woods Grove Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.

Doug enjoyed watching sports, especially his beloved UNC Tar Heels basketball team, as well as baseball, football and racing. Doug was willing to help anyone in need and was always on call to give a helping hand. He will be remembered by his family as a faithful and loving husband, dad, Papa and Popee. He will be missed by his family and his life-long friend, Tootsie Vinson, and the entire Vinson family, as well as many others, including Theresa Hackett and significant other Charlie and his boys.

A service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at Woods Grove Church with Pastor Barry Teague officiating. The family will greet friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at his home. Interment will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, in the Vinson Family Cemetery with full military honors.

Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Helen Rose Daniels Mangum; children, Bunnie and husband Bill Gent of S.C., Bruce Mangum and wife, Karen, of N.C., Jimmie Mangum and significant other, Theresa Andrews, of Virginia, Pam Mangum and significant other, Tim Smith, of N.C., and Debbie Mangum and significant other, Don Stanley, of N.C.; grandchildren, Mark Gent and wife, Jennifer, Dennis Gent and wife, Charlace, Billy Gent and significant other, Rachael, Tracey and husband Brian Smith, Jessica and husband Jourdon Pope, Melanie and husband Brandon Edgerton, Zach Mangum and fiancée, Lacy, Ashley and husband David Bratcher, and Kristin and husband Josh Brown. Great-grandchildren, Connor, Ethan, Emma, Riley, Emma, Adrianna, Adrien, Jacob, Nicolas, Kaitlyn, Jaymeson, Layla Rose, Eli, Cohen, Henry and one on the way. Several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, James, Lester, Kenneth, Matthew, John, Alice Mae (Ragland) and Harold.

Jesse Woodard “J.W.” Hooks, 78, of Goldsboro, passed away on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at UNC Chatham Hospital in Siler City.

J.W. was born in Wayne County on Sept. 23, 1940, to the late Obie Phillip Hooks and Gladys Radford Hooks. He had worked with BB&T in Goldsboro and later retired as an insurance underwriter. J.W. was a charter member of the Sunrise Kiwanis Club. He will always be remembered as a loyal man of faith and for the love and respect he had for everyone who touched his life. The best of J.W. will live on in each of us.

A service to celebrate J.W.’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, in First Baptist Church, where he was a long-time member. The Rev. Dr. Glenn Phillips and the Rev. Scott Thrailkill will officiate. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Fremont.

J.W. is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elsie R. Hooks; children, Angelia Hooks, and Jesse Hooks II and wife, Wendy; grandchildren, Carly Hooks, and Edie Rikard and husband, Alex; and a special nephew, Jay Edmundson and wife, Marlene. He is also survived by his special K-9 friend, Lucky.

The family will receive friends on Monday, March 11, 2019, from 6-8 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home.

Winston Churchill Smith, 77, passed away Saturday, March 9, 2019, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home & Crematory in Goldsboro. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at noon at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Goldsboro with military honors.

Mr. Smith was born in Wayne County, to the late Allen and Mamie Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

He is survived by a daughter, Wendy Smith (Michael) of Albertson; brother, Grover Smith; sister, Carolyn Smith; five grandchildren, Hailey Wells and Ashlyn Rhodes of Albertson, Summer Smith of Goldsboro, and Cory and Cody Smith of Great Falls, S.C.; his beloved mule, Fancy; and his companion dog, Red.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Smith; brothers, Malcolm Smith, Billy Smith and James Smith; and a sister, Doris Smith.
