Shelton Eugene “Gene” Smith Jr., 64, Goldsboro, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2019, at his home after a brief illness.

He was born in Wayne County July 18, 1954, to Shelton Eugene Smith Sr. of Goldsboro and the late Peggy Crawford Smith.

Gene retired after 35 years of service in the operations department of Wayne County Public Schools.

A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Goldsboro Worship Center, 900 W. New Hope Road, Goldsboro, N.C.

The family will greet friends immediately following the celebration, and requests that everyone share your fondest memories of Gene.

Gene is survived by his wife, Diane Horne Smith; son, Ryan Smith and wife Jennifer; stepsons, Randy Horne and wife, Laurie, and Troy Horne; grandchildren, Owen, Tressa, Tana, Hanna, Aaron and Caleb; and a great-grandchild, Raelynn.

He is also survived by his father, Shelton E. Smith Sr. and wife, Charlotte; sisters, Katherine Grant and husband, Tim, and Carolyn Wegman and husband, Mike; brother, Jon Smith and wife, Jennifer; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

In addition to his mother, Gene was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his son, Rita Johnson Smith.

Flowers are welcome or memorials may be given in his memory to Community Home Care and Hospice, 2309 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, N.C., 27534.

Faith Ella-Victoria Teachey, 508 W. New Hope Road, died Monday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Wynn Cemetery.

She was born March 11, 2019, in Wayne County to Lakesha Parker and Kelvin Teachey.

James R. Scott

James Ray Scott, 73, Warsaw, died Tuesday at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Community Funeral Home chapel, Warsaw. Burial will be in Pinecrest Cemetery.

He was born March 3, 1946, in Duplin County to Durwood W. and Lena Grace Phillips Scott.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Ethel L. Yelverton

Sept. 18, 1940 —March 10, 2019

Ethel L. Yelverton, 78, died Sunday at the Brian Center, Goldsboro.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Goldsboro Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, with elder James E. Collins officiating. Burial will be at Wayne Memorial Park.

She was born Sept. 18, 1940, in Wayne County to John Jr. and Ethel Mae Lewis. She was married to Hercules Yelverton.

She is survived by her children.

Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Howard D. Peterson Jr.

Aug. 24, 1950 —March 7, 2019

Howard Dancie “Fuzzy” Peterson Jr., 68, 405 S. Andrews Ave., died March 7 at Wayne UNC Health Care.

Funeral will be noon Friday at Wave of Glory Faith Ministries, with apostle Daniel Uzzell officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. at Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors.

He was born Aug. 24, 1950, in Wayne County to Howard Dancie Sr. and Mattie Holmes Peterson. He was married to Mary Artis.

He is survived by three daughters and three stepchildren.

Visitation will be 11 to 11:50 a.m. Friday at the church. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, 1707 N. William St., Goldsboro, where it will assemble for the funeral procession.

Roger W. Strickland

Roger Wayne Strickland, 76, Rocky Mount, died Tuesday at Nash UNC Health Care.
