Crystal Stone Bergner
Nov. 22, 1963-March 3, 2019
Crystal Stone Bergner passed away peacefully on Sunday at the Jim and Betsy Bryan Hospice Home in Pittsboro. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Mrs. Bergner was born Crystal Denise Stone, in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Nov. 22, 1963, to Christine Stone and the late Bobby Ray Stone, U.S. Army retired. As a young child, her family moved around quite a bit due to the requirements of military life. Eventually the family settled in Goldsboro in 1968.
After her father retired from the Army in 1975, he transitioned to farming and landscaping. Mrs. Bergner loved growing up on the farm, where she developed a passion for taking care of animals. As a teenager, she enjoyed competing in pageants. She was a runner up in the 1982 Mrs. Aycock pageant and won the 1982 Miss N.C. Hemisphere pageant. She also competed in Miss USA Hemisphere pageant and won a modeling contract in Philadelphia.
Upon graduating from Charles B. Aycock High School in 1982, Mrs. Bergner attended Atlantic Christian College (now Barton College) in Wilson, N.C., and was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority.
Mrs. Bergner married Jay Edgar Adams, of Boone, N.C., in 1984. They would go on to have three children (Nicole Whalen, Clarissa Whitmire and Alexander Adams), aged 27-33, and be married for 17 years.
Mrs. Bergner stayed home with her three children and raised two smart, strong daughters and a wonderful son. Mrs. Bergner also chose to go back and finish her degree. She graduated from Barton College in 2002 with a B.A. in Biology.
In 2005, she married Jerry Bergner of Durham, N.C. They built a wonderful life together in Durham with her and Jerry’s children, and had a sweet dog together named Lambchop.
Mrs. Bergner also took her love of animals and started a pet sitting business.
Mrs. Bergner lived a wonderful, full life. Whether it was with her beautiful singing voice, her infectious laughter or her big heart, she touched the lives of many. She loved nothing more than spending time with family, going to White Lake with her best friend Betty Lynn Lanier, laughing it up with her fellow Sweet Potato Queens and cuddling up with her animals.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry Stephen Bergner, of Durham; mother Christine Brown Stone, of Goldsboro; her siblings, Teresa Stone-Hinnant, Bobby Ray Stone and Pamela Valadez, of Goldsboro; children, Maria Nicole Whalen and her husband, Michael, of Chapel Hill, Clarissa Leigh Whitmire and her husband, Eric, of Burlington, Alexander Ray Adams of Chapel Hill, David Max Bergner of Denver, Colo., and Laura Helen Bergner of Ashland, Ore.; niece Katherine Elizabeth Hinnant of Goldsboro; nephews Bobby Ray Stone Jr. of Goldsboro, Cory Bruce Yancey of Goldsboro, and Blake Wesley Stone of Goldsboro; and dog, Lampchop, of Durham.
Her service will be held at Seymour Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, in the chapel of Seymour Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Holder officiating. There will be a visitation held in the hour prior to the funeral from 1 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
