Ellen “Pete” Faison Flowers Davis, 91, formerly of Arbours West Lane, Moore, S.C., died Friday, May 24, 2019, at Pacifica Skylyn-Spartanburg.

Born Sept. 9, 1927, in Calypso, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Carnot and Annie Faison Flowers.

A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Davis was dedicated to her husband of 53 years, the late Marvin Ray Davis (1999), especially during the last two years of his life during his final illness.

She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church Spartanburg, where she had been active in the Women of Church Circle, a volunteer at the soup kitchen and a member of the committee that visited shut-ins of the church.

She retired from Spartanburg County District 2 administration office.

Survivors include her daughter, Jo Davis Browning (George) of Moore, S.C.; daughter-in-law, Dale Salters Davis of Spartanburg, S.C.; grandchildren, Anna Browning, Greg Browning, Dori Davis Helms (Noel) and Kaysie Davis Brady (Travis); great-grandchildren, Nate Helms, Isabel Helms and Davis Brady; sister-in-law, Johnnie Davis of Calypso, N.C.; and many beloved nieces and nephews in eastern North Carolina.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Mitchell “Mickey” Ray Davis; brothers, Thomas Flowers, Lawrence Flowers and Joseph Flowers; and sister, Doris Flowers.

Visitation will be 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, S.C., 29307, with funeral services following at 4 p.m. Private entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.

Julius Eugene Sasser, 66, of Grantham, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh surrounded by his family.

Gene was born in Wayne County on Aug. 29, 1952, to the late Luby Gaston Sasser and Lucy Epps Amerson. He retired after 30 years of service with the State of North Carolina. Gene was a true sportsman, most comfortable outdoors, on the water or in the woods. He was a collector of almost anything but will be remembered as the best “Peep” by his grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Seymour Funeral Home followed by a service to celebrate Gene’s life at 7 p.m. in the chapel with the Rev. Ray Smeltzer officiating. Interment will be on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Pikeville Cemetery.

Gene is survived by his wife of 36 years, Cathy Williams Sasser; daughters, Amanda Greeno and husband, Carl, and Kelly Lou Sasser; sister, Barbara Sullivan and husband, Buddy, of Pikeville; brother, L.G. Sasser of Pikeville; sister-in-law, Dale Sasser of Goldsboro; stepbrother, Ray Amerson and wife, Jackie, of Lucama; and the apples of his eye, his grandchildren, Dakota, Justin, Jacob, Adalyn and Jackson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Brenda and Jim Grantham of Goldsboro, and his K-9 friend, Rosie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Alton Amerson; sister, Bettie Jo Sasser; and brother, Charley Guy Sasser.

Shirley Murray Kelly

Shirley Murray Kelly, 84, died May 20.

A native of Eureka, N.C., Shirley was the valedictorian of her graduating class of Eureka High School. She was the first person in her family to attend college, and she graduated from Berry College in Rome, Ga., with a B.A. in English. Shirley also received a master’s degree from Armstrong State College (Savannah, Ga.) and a master’s degree in library science and media from Georgia Southern College (Statesboro, Ga.).

She was a school teacher for 21 years before retiring to care for her beloved husband, Ben, who suffered a long illness. After his death, she returned to teaching part time until age 72. She was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles of all kinds. Sharing her love of books and learning was one of her greatest joys.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Ben Kelly; parents, Thomas and Lillian Murray; sister, Christine Hites; and brothers, Sherwood, Douglas (Bo), Ray and Joey Murray.

She is survived by her sons, Jeff Kelly (Fran) and Glenn Kelly (Lisa) of Savannah; brothers, Jimmy Murray (Linda) of Wilson, Jerry Murray of Fremont, and sister, Linda Proctor (Thomas) of Fremont; brothers-in-law, Bill Hites of Wilson, Hershel Burch of Buford, Ga., and Steve Kelly (Nancy) of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Since suffering a debilitating stroke in 2016, Shirley had lived with her sister, Linda, and husband, Thomas, who lovingly cared for her with the help of other family members including nieces Sherry Carter, Debra Proctor, Shirley Proctor and husband, Bobby Gooding, nephew, Stanley Murray, and family friend, Michelle Barnes.

Shirley was a member of Winstead United Methodist Church in Wilson and was a member of Wilmington Island Methodist Church in Savannah for many years.

A private gathering for family and close friends will be held in the Proctor home. A memorial service will be held in Savannah later this summer.

Andre Smith, 49, 600 Whitted Court, died Wednesday at Transitions Hospice Care, Raleigh.

Funeral was 2 p.m. Sunday at Lindell Revival Church, Pikeville. Burial was in St. Delight Church Cemetery, Walstonburg.

He was born Aug. 18, 1969, to Mayfield and Alma Artis Smith.

He is survived by nine children.

Linwood Earl Darden, 68, 2958 Summerlins Cross Road, Mount Olive, died May 20 at the North Carolina State Veterans Home, Kinston.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Goshen Disciple Church of Christ, Faison, with the Rev. Kenneth Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park South.

Born in Wayne County, he was the son of the late John and Rhodie S. Darden. He was married to Rebecca Darden.

Four children survive.

Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. at Garris Funeral Home chapel. The family will receive friends at 504 Brock Road, Goldsboro.

Linda Pearce Holland, 72, Pikeville, died Saturday at Kitty Askins Hospice Center.

Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial will be in Wayne Memorial Park.

She is survived by two children.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Evelyn Hines, 91, of 618 S. Taylor St., died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Wayne County to Andrew and Lucy Mae Kornegay Hines.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the James T. Haskins chapel at Haskins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Old Mill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. The family will assemble at the residence in preparation for the funeral service.
