Wayne Christian’s Abigail Kornegay holds the grand slam ball she hit in Wayne Christian’s 11-6 against Faith Christian.

Wayne Christian School’s varsity softball won its second game of the season against Faith Christian School 11-6 in 7 innings. Brianna Verme threw a complete game. She pitched 11 strikeouts, 0 walks and gave up four hits. One of those hits was a three-run home run, and three of the six runs were earned. After a scoreless two innings, Abigail Kornegay got things started with a grand slam over the center field fence to put Wayne up by a score of 4-0. Hailey Verme and Rachel Barns each had a double. Wayne Christian (2-0 overall) will host Wilson Prep on at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Wayne Christian 16, Wilson Prep 2

Wayne Christian continued its hot start to the season with a 16-2 win against Wilson Prep on Friday. Will White got the win on the mound. He pitched four innings, gave up two runs and tossed nine strikeouts. White was also 1-3 from the plate with two RBIs, while Addison Johnson got the save by pitching one inning and threw two strikeouts. Jaxson Bauer went 3-4 from the plate with two RBIs, while Johnson finished 3-4 from the plate with two doubles and two RBIs. Zach Brenner was 2-2 and an RBI and Brayden Crawford 1-2 with two RBIs.

East Duplin 9, Spring Creek 0

Spring Creek dropped a game against East Duplin 9-0. David Williams had the Gators’ lone hit with a double, while Landon Smothers and Cole Honeycutt both threw two strikeouts. Jordan Ammons tossed one strikeout.

Wayne Country Day 5, Friendship Christian 3 (Thursday)

Tanner Willman pitched 51/3, tossed 14 strikeouts and gave up three runs as the Chargers toppled Friendship Christian 5-3. Willman was 1-2 from the mound. Preston Barnes, Aoha Godo and D.J. Drew each had one RBI.

Neuse Charter 11, Goldsboro 8

Cameron Roux hit two triples, and Drake hit Ennis hit a double, but the Cougars dropped a nonconference game against Neuse Charter on Friday.

The Gators rolled past Princeton 9-1 in a nonconference meet on Thursday. In the number one singles match, Noah Goroski beat Blaine Phillips 6-1, 6-3, while Elias Soto defeated Juan Bravo 6-2, 6-1. Joseph Lebron lost to Jared Jones 4-6, 6-2, 6-10 in the number three singles match. Aubrey Pollock toppled Matthew Eason 6-1, 6-3, and Joseph O’Hara beat Luis Contreras 6-2, 6-0. In the final singles match, Matthew Morton beat Leo Vilchez 6-2, 6-0. In the number one doubles match, Goroski and Soto beat Phillips and Bravo 8-0. Lebron and O’Hara, and Pollock and Morton also won their doubles matches 8-0. In the final doubles matches, Calvin Alphin and Jaylen Staps won their match 8-6.

Local golf

Lane Tree Ladies Golf Association kicked off its first week of play from March 4-10. The Red Tee winners: Shelley Leder had the game of the week, Sherry Minner had the low net, while Nan Jarrell had the low putts. Forward Tee Winners: Linda Watson played the game of the week, and Mary Ann Sutton had the low net.
