Prep track and field
Eastern Wayne High School’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams along with South Central, J.H. Rose, D.H. Conley, Southern Wayne, New Bern and Charles B. Aycock competed in the Eastern Carolina 3-A/4-A Championship hosted by New Bern. On boys’ side, South Central placed first with 169.10 points, D.H. Conley came in second with 103.60 points and Eastern Wayne. was third with 100 points. Eastern Wayne had 100 points, while J.H. Rose finished with 86.70. Southern Wayne scored 84 points and C.B. Aycock had 62.60 points. Eastern Wayne’s Kris Clark won the jump event, while teammates Angus Dove and Jaylin Speight won the 400-meter dash and the 110-meter hurdles respectively. Speight placed second second in the 300-meter hurdles, Marcus Rouse was second in the long jump and Jaikwez Woresly finished second in the shot put event. Southern Wayne’s Xavious Speight won the long jump event.
On the girls’ side South Central placed first with 185.75 points, J.H. Rose came in second with 113 points and D.H. Conley was third with 112.50 points. Eastern Wayne had 100 points, while Southern Wayne finished with 63. New Bern scored 56 points and C.B. Aycock had 3.75 points. Eastern Wayne’s Rayven Smith took the high jump event, while the Warriors also won the 4x200 and 4x100 relays. Southern Wayne’s Alexus Elliott won the shot put and discus events. Elliotts’ teammates Erykah Baldwin placed first in the long jump. Eastern Wayne’s Destany Fuller was second in the 100-meter dash, while Taniyah Oates and Jada Hamilton tied for second in the long jump. Oates was also second in the high jump.
Midway 4, Goldsboro 0 (Thursday)
Matthew Lewis and Natorian Nobles combined to limit Midway to just three hits, but the Cougars were unable to topple Midway. Lewis had two hits in the game, while Josh Hartsfield had one hit. Midway’s Sawyer Sutton got the win on the mound, while Eli Culbreth got the save.
Rosewood 4, Princeton 0 (Thursday)
Rosewood scored three runs in the first inning on its way to shutout win against rival Princeton. Patrick Jones went 1-3 with two RBIs and a double, while Logan Merritt was 1-4 with a triple and an RBI. Tanner Capps finished with an RBI and Will Harris hit a double. Harris also pitched a complete game, allowed two walks, two hits and retired four Bulldogs. Princeton was led by Trace Hickman, who was 3-3 from the plate. Will Gurganious pitched all seven innings, gave up four runs (four earned), eight hits, two walks, and struck out three batters.
South Central 14, C.B. Aycock 3 (Wednesday)
Abbey Thomas went 1-2 with home run, but the Golden Falcons lost to South Central. Shawna Williams was 1-2, Abigial Lancaster went 1-3 and Taylor Gay finished 1-3.
Prep girls’ soccer
Princeton 3, Rosewood 2 (Thursday)
Rachel Creech, Esbeydy Bautista and Veronica Blackman all scored one goal as the Bulldogs slipped past the Eagles. Bautista and Blackman also finished with one assist apiece.
New Bern 10, Eastern Wayne 1 (Tuesday)
Jocelyn Lopez scored a goal, but Eastern Wayne dropped a game against New Bern.
