PRINCETON — The Princeton Bulldogs defeated the Voyager Academy Vikings 86-57 in the first round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A playoffs on Tuesday night.
The Bulldogs dominated the game from start to finish, and their dominance started in the first quarter with some stellar defense. The Bulldogs gave up just 10 points in the entire first quarter to grab a 22-10 lead.
Princeton continued to control the pace of the game, and limit Voyager Academy’s scoring in the second quarter. At halftime, the Bulldogs led 45-26.
The Bulldogs never allowed Voyager Academy to even make the game competitive, and the final score was Princeton with 86 points to Voyager Academy’s 57 points.
The leading scorers for Princeton were senior Tyrese Whitley with 30 points, and senior Jaheim Taylor with 24 points.
The playoff win was especially satisfying for Taylor, who scored his 1,000th career point during the game.
“The amazing thing is that Jaheim has basically done it in two seasons,” said head coach David Cobb about Taylor’s milestone achievement. “He played his full sophomore season, broke his arm midway through last year, and then of course he is fighting through the COVID season.
“He’s a scoring machine, and when he gets rolling there are very few people that can stay with him.”
Cobb also talked about Whitley’s 30-point game.
“The big thing tonight was Tyrese,” Cobb said. “Tyrese came out early, and just was on fire. He was strong to the basket, and he hit his threes.”
With Tuesday night’s win, Princeton improves to 16-0 on the season, and will move on to the next round of the playoffs. Voyager Academy drops to 8-5 and has been eliminated from the NCHSAA 1A playoffs.
Princeton will play Wilson Preparatory Academy (3-2) on Thursday night in Wilson in the second round of the playoffs.
