MOUNT OLIVE — Mount Olive defeated the Crusaders of North Greenville University 77-51 on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas men’s basketball action at Kornegay Arena in Mount Olive. Seniors Tanner Poole and Jamaal Matin were recognized prior to the game for their dedication to the Trojan Green and White.
After the Crusaders scored the opening points the Trojans went on a 12-0 run to lead 12-2 at the 15:44 mark following a Matin three-pointer.
Over the next three minutes, NGU cut the UMO lead to four points, 15-11, but Mount Olive countered with a 14-point run to go up 29-11 at the 7:30 mark.
A Matin layup as the clock approached six minutes put the Trojans up by 20 points, 33-13.
The baskets cooled off as the teams combined for eight points through the remainder of the half as UMO led 35-19 at the halftime buzzer.
Matin came out of the halftime break scoring four consecutive three-pointers helping the Trojans maintain their 20-point lead, 47-27.
Don Pigford scored the next six points for Mount Olive on a pair of layups and a pair of free throws that gave UMO a 22-point lead, 53-31.
Over the next four minutes, the Trojans led a 10-3 run that put Mount Olive ahead nearly 30-points as the score sat at 63-34 as the clock approached the eight-minute mark.
A layup by Michael Brown followed by a layup from Matin gave UMO a 31-point lead, 68-37, with less than six to play.
NGU led a 14-9 run to cut UMO’s lead to 26 but could not overcome the dominating performance by the Trojans who won 77-51.
Jamaal Matin led Mount Olive with 32 points.
Tanner Poole led the team with eight rebounds.
Darius Spragley was the only other Trojan to score double digits with 13 points.
Mount Olive is back in action on tonight, when they travel to Due West, S.C., for the final regular season game of the year. The Trojans and Flying Fleet meet at half-court for the first tip at 7:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game at 5:30 p.m.
