MOUNT OLIVE — No. 11 University of Mount Olive Trojans falls to the Bulldogs of Wingate University 10-9 Tuesday afternoon at Scarborough Field in Mount Olive.
Mount Olive got the game started in the right direction as Jon Cosme led off the bottom of the first with a walk.
Cosme then moved into scoring position off a sacrifice fly from Nate Estes and then UMO took the lead off the bat of Joe Mason.
Mason singled through the right side and gave the Trojans the 1-0 lead.
Following a walk to Gunner Tolston, Aaron Hedgepeth singled to left center to push Mason for the second run of the inning and UMO took a 2-0 lead.
Wingate answered with a solo home run to lead off the top of the second and drew the lead down to one.
Zack Smith led off the bottom of the second with a single and advanced into scoring position on a groundout by Blake McLean.
After a strikeout, Nate Estes doubled down the right field line to push home Smith to regain the two-run lead 3-1.
The Trojans pushed home another run in the bottom of the third as Tolston started off the frame with a solo home run on the first pitch of the inning.
WU answered in the top of the fourth with three runs sandwiched between a Trojan error to tie the game up at four.
Three straight base hits to lead-off the Wingate half of the fifth led to a run crossing the plate as the Bulldogs took the lead.
A sacrifice fly continued the inning and added another run to the new cushion for Wingate as they led 6-4.
Base hits by Hedgepeth, Junior Snow, and a bunt single by Smith loaded the bases for the Trojans to open the bottom of the fifth.
McLean lifted a ball to deep right field deep enough to score Hedgepeth and move every runner up a base and UMO trailed by one.
Cosme then put a ball in play and the Bulldogs attempted to throw out Snow at home but the throw was not in time and the Trojans tied the game at six all.
Wingate took the lead in the top of the eighth on two two-run home runs and moved ahead 10-6.
Mount Olive fought back in the bottom of the eighth with two outs as JT Stone doubled over the head the center fielder to give the Trojans some life.
Joe Mason continued the inning by reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher and Stone moved to third.
Tolston helped the cause with an RBI single through the right side of the infield and UMO decreased the deficit to 10-7.
Hedgepeth added another clutch hit as he blooped a hit over first and scored Mason.
The battery was not done yet as Snow singled into right as Tolston touch home and made the score 10-9, but that was all Mount Olive could get as the inning ended on a fly out.
In the Trojans final at bats of the game, McLean started the frame in the right way getting a slicing base hit down the right field line.
An attempted bunt turned into a doubled play that killed the momentum for UMO and the final out was recorded following the double play and the Trojans fell 10-9.
Kyle Davis (2-2) was pinned with the loss in relief going an inning and two thirds allowing four runs, off five hits and struck out one.
Gunner Tolston led the team with two RBI, a walk, two runs scored, going 2-for-4 at the dish.
Mount Olive will complete the two-game series with Wingate tomorrow at Scarborough Field 4 p.m.
